Does anyone have a hemnes or brimnes bed, the type that pulls out to make a double with the drawers underneath?
I have a complicated question….

We have 2 Hemmnes - how can I help?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/05/2023 10:44

Awww thanks @Hoppinggreen
so I have a small box room, currently feeling crowded with a small double bed in.
my DS likes a small double when he’s home from uni.
im wondering if I could get a pull out bed, and put a small double futon mattress on.
when it’s a single, the extra foot of mattress could be up almost like a back rest.
then pull out but only to small double width for DS, maybe I could put a chest of drawers in place to stop it pulling out further.
would that work? Any thoughts?
thanks so much x

I have a hemnes in a small room. I have 2 Ikea mattresses on it, when it's a single, the mattresses are stacked, and when it's pulled out the mattresses are side by side with a fitted sheet keeping them together. Cushions can be used as a backrest when it's a single/sofa. Works well for me.

But - it was a pain to put together. The instructions show that you build each half and then put them together. My room was too small for that, so had to build each half overlapping - it worked, but I swore off flat pack furniture for a good few months afterwards 😂

The pull out bit would be lower though wouldn’t it? Dd has a brimnes one with the second mattress.

My DC have the double mattress and it folds under to make a thicker single
You do need it to pull out fully though because it kind of locks together and I don’t think it would be strong enough to take much weight if it wasn’t fully out.
It needs to be one or the other I think.
Hopefully that helps (or not)

How about an IKEA UTÅKER - two stackable single beds that can be separated to make a small double?

Yea that would work, I did it with a normal mattress on the hemmes but check the length of the mattress as normal sizes not long enough. I just stuffed he gab with cushions as when using as a sofa the lip around the back is uncomfortable.

It's great for storage though I do love it

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/05/2023 11:15

Thank you everyone, really helpful x

Also, I can’t have a single that makes a full size double as there is only room for a small double 120 cm in the room x

What about a sofa bed? They look narrower?

Or I’ve seen an IKEA hack where the bed base is made with kallax.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/05/2023 16:27

I did think about a sofa bed too, would need to be really comfy as a bed and I’m not sure many clic clac are?

At most it’d be 3 months in summer?
ive tried a few comfy ones.

Or add a mattress topper?

Lemme · 25/05/2023 17:03

We use a regular double mattress which isn’t long enough, so extra pillows stuffed in the end. When we used the thin single mattresses that pile on top of each other for the single and lie side by side for the large double, they were so thin that one of the slats broke when my kid stood on the bed.
Using the wider mattress has stopped this problem.a

Do you have decent height in the room? If so, could you consider small double high sleeper? This kind of thing... https://www.strictlybedsandbunks.co.uk/4ft-small-double-icarus-4ft-small-double-heavy-duty-solid-pine-high-sleeper-bunk-bed-456

I have both Hemnes and Brimnes beds and for me the futon halfway up the wall plan would get on my nerves! 😁Also, I can't remember because I haven't pulled either bed out in a while, but I think the PP is right about needing to pull the bed out fully to make it flat and lock properly.

I’ll have a look at a high sleeper, good idea.
ive also seen a futon clic clac on sofa bed barn which looks good.

The Hemnes doesn't need to be out fully.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/05/2023 14:19

ah thanks @80sgirly thats helpful to know

Africa2go · 26/05/2023 17:19

A small double mattress wouldn't work!!

We have the Hemnes - it is 80cm wide (by 200cm long) and when you pull out the bottom section, it is 80 + 80 so 160cm wide. A standard double mattress is 135cm (x 190cm long) so it would be too small for the frame. I mean for the length, woould could use some pillows to make up the extra 10cm, not a big deal, but the double mattrress would be 25cm too narrow - it would work in that the small double mattress would sit on top of the bed frame, but it wouldn't look right if you know what I mean - there would be quite a big gap.

gloriawasright · 26/05/2023 20:04

I have had a few of these beds over the years .great for storage.
But be careful with the measurements.
I always understood that the sofa bed is actually king sized when used as a bed.
I may be wrong about that though.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/05/2023 23:09

@Africa2go I was hoping that the bed doesn’t need pulling out to the full extent but just to the width of a small double, - there isn’t room for a full size double.

OP posts:
SwayingInTime · 26/05/2023 23:31

Where would the mattress live? And the small mattress when in use as a double?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/05/2023 09:23

I was thinking of a futon mattress so the extra foot of width would fold up like a backrest

OP posts:
toooldforgymnastics · 27/05/2023 09:43

We have the Brimnes one and my son uses it full time half pulled out exactly as you are planning. It works perfectly.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/05/2023 12:05

Ah great @toooldforgymnastics thanks!
how do you make the mattress work?

We just have a normal mattress and he has pillows and a folded duvet to act as an extra bit of mattress at the side. Your way with the futon sounds much better though.
