My stepdad very kindly built us a lovely pergola which we have had decking put in I have also put lights on and some nice fake ivy . Two of the walls to it are the boundary between us and the neighbours and are breeze block , I have painted it a nice cream colour but it looks so bare , anyone successfully brightened up breeze blocks without it looking naff ?

Put a small border next to the wall and plant a selection of climbers to climb up the wall.

@JaninaDuszejko that's a good idea the decking goes right to the breeze blocks so I would have to buy some pots of something very easy to maintain as I'm not very green fingered 😩

Clematis are pretty as are passion flowers.

You can get planter boxes with trellis attached. I have two that I have painted with a bright pink Cuprinol wood paint. They are about five feet high.

Passion flower are beautiful but can get huge. Clematis is a good suggestion. If you want annuals, sweet peas for the trellis and nasturtiums or ivy geraniums to grow down the side of the boxes.

At the moment I’m enjoying a view through a window of trellis with fake white roses, where I’ve tried to grow actual plants but it’s too dark and they all die

Thanks everyone , I'm going to try clematis I think and also some realistic fake ones , it's a lovely sunny area it's just lacking something !

I have seen lots of videos of people cladding it in wood, so roofing battens which are those really thin ones or actual planks of wood. If your Stepdad has managed to build you a pergola then this should be easy, just attach a batten to the wall vertically then attach the wood horizontally. I will link two videos for you showing the different widths of wood.

@mycatsanutter you're welcome. Instant impact and relatively easy hopefully. There are lots of videos of people doing this especially with roofing battens and painting them black, attaching them to existing fencing too. YouTube in an incredible resource for make overs, learning skills etc. If you feel brave you could post a before and after photo on here!
