Bed buying advice? I have ALL the questions

Is this the right forum?

I was going to get an IKEA bed (price)

I wanted a bed frame and absolutely didn’t want a divan (the last ones we had were cheap, they seem to take up more space and they're hard to clean under)

We had an ikea hövåg mattress and that was good, but it's been discontinued and the replacement doesn’t seem as good. The ikea mattresses were decent, but I started to wonder about cost vs longevity.

So then I started to think about a good mattress on an ikea frame…

I have a bad back, so need a good mattress. Mattress is more important to me than a frame.

I went to a showroom to day to have a look at what I've seen online (not in the UK) and I'm confused….

Obviously, they were twice the cost of Ikea, but with a 25 year guarantee and the quality was clearly SO much better!

The thing is, all of the beds were divans (with springs in) and most seemed to have a topper - I’ve never bothered about a topper before (and didn’t try in ikea), but the bed I liked the best came with a topper.

The showroom man said I could put a mattress on a frame, but it wouldn’t be possible to know what it felt like (showroom mattresses were to be tried on divans).

Any bed buying advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I don’t clean under my divans, why would you need to ?

Because they get dusty and all sorts gets blown underneath. I like to hoover under beds when I hoover the room (I have preferred having bed frames with nothing under to lover divan).

The legs are 14 cm, so lower than the 20cm frame I currently have, but not as low as the divan feet I had before.

Do not get a mattress with a topper. They sink quickly & you’re stuck with a bed with permanent person shaped divots.

The frame does matter as the mattress will feel different on different bases.

I have a divan with storage, it's useful and supports the mattress well! A frame just doesn't for me.

I don't have a built in topper - we tested and found the mattress we liked in a high street store, then I found a separate mattress and topper that was the same as the in store one (but meant we could flip everything so it doesn't sink!). Cost 1/5 of the price (a 2k+ mattress - no Thankyou 😂) and it's lasted really well.

I do wonder how much the topper matters. Sometimes I think that if it gets soft etc then I can change it, but them what’s the point in that? Shouldn’t the mattress be ok by itself? Then I think that the topper maybe makes it more customisable.

I did lie on t tempura one. I got stuck 😁 Comfortable, but I could put turn 😅

I wonder why a frame doesn’t support the mattress a much - I did read that they breathed more(?) I have only owned a couple of beds. The divan one was the most comfortable one, but was also the most expensive. I hated the lowness of the divan base.

I like the look of frames more, but maybe everything is telling me to look at the divan. My last one was solid. The ones I looked at today were almost like another mattress.

The toppers I looked at weren’t built in (ie attached), but it came with the bed. Not all came with one, but it seemed to be expected that I would get one as part of the package (sales or what’s done here, I don’t know).

Op, I have tried the tempur one and would like to purchase it soon. Interesting you said you got stuck and couldn’t turn, I had only lain on it - sounds like I need to get really comfy! Is there any reason why you have ruled this out?

anyone here with tips on tempur? if you have it is it any good?

I only tried it briefly because I was curious. I’m a side sleeper, so lay down on one side before trying to flip over. It was comfortable, but I had sunk in and made a depression on one side and it was hard to flip over to my other side. This is not normal bed behaviour, though.

Ah that’s interesting. Sounds like you lay on a soft mattress! We are looking at the firm one which doesn’t do that, so I suppose normal mattress behaviour for the soft ones!

Yes probably. I mean it wasn’t normal bed behaviour for me - lying down, then immediately flipping over, so it wasn’t a true test of what it might normally be like.

Adviceneeded234 · 21/05/2023 15:55

Ah ok, that’s makes sense. I did find the soft one was like falling into the mattress though ( not in a comfortable type of way! )

have you narrowed down any mattresses? Curious as we are in the market too!

NocturnalBird · 22/05/2023 15:53

We just bought an Argos cheap storage divan base and this mattress to go with it
Buy Silentnight Middleton 800 Pocket Memory Double Mattress | Mattresses | Argos

It is really comfortable and deep, in fact the bed is higher than the wood frame one that we used to have. I don't see the problem with cleaning under the divan it is on wheels and I just move it to vaccuum under it

LadyDanburysHat · 22/05/2023 16:00

An Ikea frame is the wrong size for a UK mattress. Ikea beds and mattresses are longer by about 14 cm or so.

I don't understand what you mean by a divan with springs? The springs are surely in the mattress. The Divan base is just a wooden base covered in fabric. You could buy any old base you want and put any type of mattress on it.

FutureIsSlim · 22/05/2023 17:46

I'm not in the UK - I'm looking for a mattress 160x200cm, which is the same as an Ikea mattress.

This size is the largest our room can take - won't make moving to clean easy (around other furniture).

The divan bases definitely were sprung - almost like a mattress in top of another mattress. My old divan wasn't sprung - that's why I wonder whether it's totally necessary.

The main mattress choices are between IKEA, Wonderland and Jensen.
