Paint over vajazzle wallpaper?

overthegrey · 14/05/2023 14:16

Can I paint over this wallpaper?
It's textured and has glitter, in a kind of diamond/wave/vulva pattern.
The only thing I hate more than grey wallpaper is stripping wallpaper.
But I'm worried the vajazzle might break through the paint. Any thoughts/experience please?

Yup I reckon the pattern will come though. Primary worry would be the paint doesn't adhere properly and flakes within a year.
On top of that if you think I'll stripping wallpaper is a hassle, just try stripping painted wallpaper!

Just wet it down and scrape it off.

Smartiepants79 · 14/05/2023 14:23

Well you can’t cover textures with paint, so if that pattern is raised in any way you will still see it. It’ll just be a different colour.
Strip it off.

Twillow · 14/05/2023 14:24

You might hide the glitter but the pattern will stay.

Tromso · 14/05/2023 15:52

Afraid I agree with the others, you'll need to take the paper off unfortunately.

But thank you for posting a photo of it to back up your vulva pattern claim - I've seen many downstairslike prints over the years but this is the best example I've ever seen. The mind boggles.

overthegrey · 14/05/2023 19:45

Thanks all, I guess it'll have to be stripped off. This would be my first time stripping unpainted wallpaper so maybe it won't be as bad as before.
@Tromso I'm glad you enjoyed the photo. I didn't even realise til I went to take the photo but I can't unsee it now unfortunately so this job has climbed the priority list!

Scratch it all up to allow the moisture in then hot water with fairy liquid and a sharp scraper. It'll come right off.

We did in our 1930s house, the shiny raised pattern hall wallpaper was painted over with Focus Diy home brand emulsion when we moved in and since then it has had 2 coats of Farrow and Ball modern emulsion over the top to freshen up. Each time we did think that we could strip it off but then thought about the state of the wall underneath and the cost of skimming/repapering, the wall would not have been in any fit state to just paint so we just put another coat on top, it looks fine and has not cracked or come through at all.

User14528564 · 20/05/2023 08:02

The pattern on the wallpaper was quite non descript though and has got less with each coat of paint 😂. With your pattern though you may want to remove it but I have added my experience in case others want to paint this type of wallpaper so they can see that it is possible if the budget won't stretch to a complete redo.

Yerroblemom1923 · 20/05/2023 08:03

The vajazzle is strong. It will break through.

CatsOnTheChair · 20/05/2023 08:41

We've stripped wallpaper off 2 rooms recently. One set the top layer pealed off beautifully, leaving the lining stuck to the wall. We have used that lining as the base.
The other room we had to soak and scrape.
So, before scoring and soaking the whole lot, find a corner, and have a pick. If you are lucky, the top layer will just peal off, and the room will be stripped by lunchtime!

CorsicaDreaming · 21/05/2023 07:54

Just bite the bullet and paint it a dark pinkish purple OP - it will be a real conversation piece 😼

DiscoBeat · 21/05/2023 07:58

One thing I might be tempted to try first is an electric sander, to see if I could get the pubes off. If it's flat it would then be perfectly paintable.

Zeonlywayisup · 21/05/2023 08:03

Strip the vajazzle.😱

overthegrey · 21/05/2023 11:12

😂

I don't know why I'm laughing, I still have terrible wallpaper.

Have you a steam mop that converts to a handheld steamer (I've one that was about £50 in Argos). Mine v successfully stripped 2 rooms where the wallpaper had been painted over about 5 times - at least once with gloss paint!

SeaToSki · 21/05/2023 11:28

i second the steamer option as making the stripping much easier (why am I slightly uncomfortable talking about stripping in a thread about wallpaper..it must be the vajazzle context 🤣)

primoseyellow · 21/05/2023 11:30

I say paint it, Ive always painted over wallpaper with no problems. I do 2 possibly 3 thin coats. Don't worry if it bubbles , as it drys it will be pulled back onto the wall.

Cyanchicken · 21/05/2023 11:39

I vote for paint over and make the vulvas a feature! Wink

CrotchetyQuaver · 21/05/2023 12:06

That is spectacular. 😂
I think it's a stripping job myself...

LemonSwan · 21/05/2023 13:22

Worth doing a test patch in paint and seeing what happens. Could look super cool in a really matte paint and good colour.
