What style of Kitchen is going to age well

We are in a (rare for us) position to be able to rip out our kitchen and start from scratch. We can change the layout and style to (almost) anything. We have a large kitchen but I am fairly shit at picturing what something will look like.

What styles of kitchen have you got/seen that won’t look out of date in 5 years?

Also any recommendations for who to go to for a really good design/layout. Is a local independent better than someone like Wren or similar?

I have a cream Shaker which I believe will not date. I was however stupid enough to go to Wren. The whole process took 10 months from start to finish. I would be hard pressed to consider Wren again even with a gun to my head!

I ripped out a cream shaker kitchen as I found it a bit boring.

Spend all of your time and money on ensuring that the layout of the kitchen works. Once you’ve got that right, the rest can follow.

I would then say solid wood for cabinets and a matt finish, plus cupboards and drawers to have handles/knobs/cup pulls.

That way, if you have the basic bones, you can always update the look fairly easily - repainting cupboards, changing handles, choose to spend more on a new worktop or floor - these can all change the look of the room fairly easily without the need for a whole new kitchen.

I like putty or French frey shaker kitchens with either Wood effect laminate with square edges or proper wood worktops, chrome taps & stainless appliances, brushed steel knobs on cupboards & brushed steel cup handles on drawers. My mum had a pine kitchen fitted & has had to have all the doors & drawer fronts changed as the varnish had worn away, she now has sage green shaker drawers & doors with wooden knobs, her worktops have flecks of the same green in them.

Honestly OP, go with what you like. It seems odd (to me) to approach quite a large investment on what a future buyer / you in 10/15 years might think is still relatively acceptable.

Go with something you love, but ideally with something that can be changed up in future - if you go with wooden cupboards, they can be painted later. If you have a handle / knob which attaches with one screw hole (rather than say a long thin handle with 2 screw holes) you can change the handles relatively easily. As a pp says, think about how you fit a worktop so it doesn't mean you have to rip out the whole backsplash etc if you want to change it (so maybe look at having an upstand which means you can remove the worktop once you remove the upstand rather than having to chip away at tiles for instance).

We have a kitchen that was "on trend" 5 years ago and everyone was already saying it was dated / would date etc. I still love it. Its my house and I spend lots of time in there. So much better than having a "meh" kitchen which is OK, works etc but was chosen just on the basis that it would be "timeless".

Most posters here would class my kitchen as horribly dated, since its light grey, glossy and with no hardware! And a quartz countertop!
I LOVE IT! I dont care what anyone else thinks!

My whole house is light grey and white, as is the furniture (accents of colour on the sofa cushions, for instance) and I dont care if anyone thinks it is dated or looks like a flip.
I chose for it to be that way when I remodelled it and I love it!

OP, I would NOY choose a shaker style cabinet. Those crevices will trip you up.
But something you can paint is probably a good shout! That way you can chage it up for a low cost in a few years, if you want to.

I love my glossy kitchen, but would probably go matte, if I had to redo it, cause you see every single fingerprint on it, so Im either contantly wiping the cabinet doors, or Im just staring at the fingerprints and feeling annoyed (not really, but you get my point)

BeenThereTooo · 09/07/2023 09:09

@ASGIRC I have the matte one and believe me it also shows the fingerprints. As the doors hardware is hidden or push touch there is this tendency to plaster your fingers all over it - I blame my H. It seems I have no sooner done it than there they are again. Ours is a new one. I have had so many kitchens over the years from a very 1980s shaker style Paul Rosa kitchen with corner units to put your cookbooks in 😂 to today's. While trying to find an image of it I did find this which is really interesting - so many types of kitchen.

We went for a white shaker style. I would have loved to be more adventurous with colour, but it is a huge outlay for us to have a completely new kitchen, we know we wouldn't be doing it for about 15-20 years again so needed something that would stand the test of time hopefully.

Wooden worktops look good but they are a pain in the arse in my opinion

I think shaker kitchens always look very dated (very 90s). They are also a pain to clean. I would go flat wood that you can repaint. Marble tops are also dated, go for something plain or wood.

This, I think they are awfully dated. The crevices are a dust and grease nightmare!

BeenThereTooo · 09/07/2023 10:12

I think kitchens are so sleek now due to the open space trend of kitchen and living area.

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2023 12:51

Every kitchen company seems to supply Shaker style kitchens so they must still be in demand, otherwise they would drop the style. We have ordered two kitchens in the last couple of years (investment properties) both times we have ordered Matt Shaker style. Inoffensive, Design, that most people can live with, even if it wouldn’t be the kitchen they would necessarily chose.

I have shaker style solid wood from wickes, previous owners put it in.its not my fav colour being normal wood colour and black worktop but otherwise I find it nice and the crevi ds down get that dirty with dust or grease.

My parents went with the grey version from wickes with quartz top and looks stunning.

I'll stick with the shaker style I like it from the endless smooth doors u see everywhere.

Have a look at YouTube videos by "kitchinsider" and "Nick Morris" (who also posts under "1936 Bungalow Renovation"

I've picked up lots of information from their videos, and I've ruled out lots of things based on them.

In particular, the Nick Morris one where he compares kitchens on a like-for-like basis from 5 big manufacturers - Wickes, Wren, Howdens, Magnet and DIY-Kitchens. DIY-Kitchens came out on top on most things.

We had a quote from a local kitchen supplier, which was £33,000, plus appliances. It was beautiful, but I just can't justify paying that.

So my husband has gone onto DIY-Kitchens website, and replicated the design, and it comes in at £12,000 plus appliances. (It is a huge kitchen.)

The only downside to DIY-Kitchens is that they don't offer a design service, nor do they offer a bespoke service, so there is a small gap on one wall, whereas the local company could make cabinets to fit perfectly.

We're just about to do our (small, galley) kitchen in navy blue and white. I briefly thought of the dating aspect but I love it, we have no intention of moving and if we did sell I know that the buyer would rip it all out and extend out the back. That's what we would do if we could afford it. So I have no qualms with the colour that I've chosen.
