Hit a brick wall, need ur help!

I've got a bare brick wall in the kitchen. But I can't tell if the colour really goes with the wood of the doors. The doors were stained with a "light oak" colour but came out wierd. Not as imagined. Should I paint the brick wall white?

No, once you've painted the wall, you cant unpaint it. Its there for ever.

BlueKaftan · 30/04/2023 15:02

The doors need to be stained or painted dark grey or black.

Bearwithsorehead · 30/04/2023 15:08

I don't want to paint the doors as I'd have to do the whole house and I hate painting doors so much. The wall would be quick and easy, but yes then it would be painted for ever....

It’s fine but the walls and doors clash with orange pine table
if your going to paint or stain anything do the table

Ragruggers · 30/04/2023 15:55

I would paint the brick using a chalk paint, the table is a good size but the colour is a bit dated that could also be painted. It would lighten the whole room I feel.Lovely size room.

Whaeanui · 30/04/2023 16:03

I would stain the table to match the oak which I think is nice. It’s the white around the frame of the doors I think doesn’t go.

justawee · 30/04/2023 16:07

The white architrave doesn't work plus the table as previous poster have mentioned need the orange pine knocking back. Also no sure that the grey chairs work either.
But a very lovely room!

StrongTea · 30/04/2023 16:07

What about putting a much larger framed print on the wall?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 30/04/2023 16:09

Keep the doors, the architrave and the wall. Change (strip, paint etc) the table

Fatandfunny · 30/04/2023 16:10

The wall will look terrible painted. Don’t paint it. You need to restating the doors. The colour is wrong, either go for a dark oak or paint them white.

Fatandfunny · 30/04/2023 16:11

Actually scrub that, just noticed the doors match the beam at the top. So keep them as is. I’d paint the white surround and the table is the wrong colour being orange

Apologies for typos!
How about lime waxing the table?

I'd remove the picture from brick wall, it's too small. You could replace with a larger one or large mirror

The door architrave needs to be the same colour as the door

Hope that helps

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2023 16:25

I don't like the brick wall as too much and too new looking, not characterful. But can see getting it plastered would be a big job. I think it's your table and mish mash of different coloured chairs that's not helping. Maybe whatever ever you pick for your architrave (a dark colour), use that for your chairs as well? Maybe just use a table cloth for the table.

CornedBeef451 · 30/04/2023 16:28

I like the brick and woodwork but the table looks too orangey. Can you stain that to match the doors?

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 30/04/2023 16:31

Agree with PPs - the table is the main problem, it’s too orange. The door goes with the beam across the top of the brick wall.

FixTheBone · 30/04/2023 17:02

It's the door frame that looks out of place to me.. I'd replace the architrave and stain the same as the door.

LibertyLily · 30/04/2023 18:23

Firstly, the architrave needs to be the same colour as the doors. Right now it looks very strange being white.

The table is also way too orange, but could be painted as it's a great size.

I'm not a fan of exposed brick - or stone - walls internally particularly if they are new looking bricks such as these, but I don't have to live in your house. If it were me, I'd want all the brickwork plastering....but I'm not sure that painting is a good idea because - as has already been mentioned - once painted there's no turning back.

In our 400 year old house we had an exposed brick chimney breast in a reception room which we have incorporated into the kitchen. I hated it from the get go, even after we'd had a wood burner fitted into the recess. It made the whole room feel dingy and dirty. Although the house isn't listed, we didn't want to plaster straight onto the brick as a future owner might prefer the exposed brick look. So we battened, boarded and skimmed it before ultimately wallpapering it...and now I love it. But I'm aware it's very much personal taste as some may see the brick as more cottage-y!

dig135 · 30/04/2023 18:32

I think white painted bricks look awful. I'd get the table to match the architrave round the door. Or plasterboard over if you hate the brick.

Personally I love the brick wall, gives it some character.

dig135 · 30/04/2023 18:33

Sorry the door colour, not the white architrave.

Bearwithsorehead · 30/04/2023 19:04

Thankyou all!, some good ideas. We did this barn conversion ourselves and I was chief painter and decorator. It took a long time and I have a shoulder injury to prove it, so there's no way I'm going to start repainting all the architrave, skirting or doors now! Just couldn't face it. But the table and chairs is a good place to start, then see how the wall looks. It is an oak table, but over 20 years old and is looking rather orange you're right. Thanks! Panorama added for more context X

It looks great on the panorama!

minipie · 30/04/2023 19:10

I would paint the wall definitely. The white architrave looks a bit odd as is, and to me the brick is too new looking to be a feature. Also I am not sure exposed brick goes with your (lovely) quite traditional kitchen. You could just paint it (use breathable paint) - no render - which would keep the surface texture to add character but take away the colour clash issue.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2023 19:34

The panorama does look better but your table looks shiny. Is it varnished? Needs sanding back and waxing or oiling. And I think you need to paint all of your chairs, not have some natural/varnished and some paint. Could be a few different colours but not a mix of wood and painted.

Fatandfunny · 30/04/2023 19:39

It looks fine on tin panorama and also matches the beam as said. The table is quite dated. I’d sand and stain it, it is a bit orange.

LassoOfTruth · 30/04/2023 19:39

I would put more pictures on the wall and try a few “removable” fixes - a rug, pot plants - could make all the difference. Personally I quite like the brick but to my eye it needs to be broken up a bit.
