What is your home style and where do you buy your decor?

Just curious to know. I am obsessed with home decor and I have a fairly eclectic taste (my home is a mix of ikea, upscaled second hand furniture, thrifted stuff and accessories bought on various trips etc) and having a nicely curated, colorful home makes me very happy.
What is yours like and where do you usually buy your stuff from?

Similar. We have expensive Natuzzi sofas and also IKEA sofas. We used to buy a lot from Barker & Stonehouse but they have dropped a lot of brands and sell a lot more ‘generic’ stuff you can get elsewhere now. We went looking for a coffee table a few weeks ago and came away empty handed and I’m not sure where to look now so following with interest!

Also on the lookout for really decent quality soft furnishings before getting into the realms of bespoke when we have young kids and pets. Sometimes high street comes up trumps and sometimes I’d rather spend a bit more to get longevity.

We like a colourful, eclectic style and most of our furniture etc is from eBay/auction houses while a few things are from favourite local - and not so local - antique dealers .

I'd say we've always been maximalists but the eclectic vibe we have now has evolved over the years - when I met my DH as a student, I collected art deco stuff from fleamarkets/carboots (the cheapest as it was all I could afford) and that naturally progressed into art nouveau/arts and crafts movement pieces. This culminated in a fairly large collection (mostly found on eBay during the early noughties) which suited the Arts and Crafts style house we had then. Back then people we knew assumed everything had been picked up for peanuts as that's what they associated ebay with - actually our most expensive buy was a £4k sideboard!

When we decided to sell that house we gradually sold off our collection - which included ornamental and textile bits too - and our look evolved again into a more eclectic style which now incorporates a few mid century and more contemporary items.

So we now have four sofas all from ebay - one was bought new, one is antique and the other two merely preloved!

Other furniture including a massive Victorian larder cupboard and chest of drawers also come from eBay, Art Nouveau bookcases are from various auction houses across the UK. I love seeking out interesting, quality pieces that have a story to tell, although for practical reasons we did succumb to a large bank of ikea Besta cupboards in the hall.

We have added period features (eg, fireplaces) to our old-but-stripped-out house and have found many of these architectural pieces at fleamarkets and auctions.

Art is a mix of antique fair finds, framed prints and stuff I've painted myself. Mirrors (we sold many but still have loads) are again mostly from eBay.

My big love is textiles and in order to get as many wonderful fabrics into our home as possible I search out interesting examples and make cushions etc as these are - relatively - cheap to make and small too.

Our house is sort of modern country style. I get bits from all over - I usually have an idea of what I want then spend months searching the internet until I find it. I try to get things second hand if I can and have found a lot of good stuff on FB Marketplace - our hall table, bed frame, fireplace and surround were all 2nd hand bargains. Soft furnishings I always buy new though. I have things from Ikea, M&S Home, Dunelm, Next Home but also local carpenters or antique shops. Artwork is a random mix but my DD18 is a really good artist and we have some of her work framed on our walls too.

Mine is rustic modern with a splash of home edit.
I shop tk max,next,dunelm, 2nd hand.

Kingofchaos2 · 28/04/2023 21:28

Mine is colourful and eclectic, lots of different era's of furniture. Much pattern and clashing colour. Luckily we now have a big period house for me to fill with all my treasures!

People seem to like my style, even though I always think it can be a bit in your face, and I've had people as me for decor 'advice', which is lovely as I am a frustrated interior designer!

I started seasonal decorations the Spring of Lockdown.

I enjoy swapping around my crockery and soft furnishings.

Maybe it's a chavy/hoard thing, I don't care. I don't want to throw away loved items.

I didn't have many ornamental items when my children were young as one had ASD violent issues, so I am enjoying life more now.

I gathered many items over the years and added some new bits, so I curated them into seasons and get a nice refresh.

A mix of Industrial farmhouse and warm minimalist with a bit of dark academia thrown in. We’ve got loads of chunky oak furniture, lots of house plants, lots of fairy lights. Pictures and photos in black frames. Most of it’s from Etsy.

GrimDamnFanjo · 07/05/2023 12:55

Maximilism with some midcentury pieces.
Bedroom furniture is a built in wardrobe by a local joiner with freestanding gplan fresco drawers.
Gplan cupboards downstairs, Ercol armchair and Pebbles tables.
Gplan circular dining table and chairs.
Habitat shelving for a divider.
I use eBay, Etsy and ikea.
Accessories are my interest at the mo. I like Rockett St George but mainly shop in the sale or with a discount.

I love upcycling old furniture that I find in charity shops, it's amazing what a bit of painting & basic woodworking skills can achieve!

In terms of retailers, I've more recently began to use secretsupply.co.uk which I discovered on Instagram last week, in the past I've used Etsy and Wayfair but they can be a little hit & miss so make sure you double check the description/dimensions closely.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/05/2023 13:17

My default style is always mid century modern, I like the scale of it and how calm it is and love it in period properties. I use Vinterior and ebay to get original pieces but also buy things like my Vitsœ shelves in the sitting room new (we needed a lot of shelves for my books!). We also have older pieces that we've inherited or bought in various auction houses. Artwork is all original pieces we've either got from family or picked up over the years. Curtains are mainly Marimekko, I love their bright and cheerful fabric and have found a reseller of offcuts so good for the environment and more choice of patterns because they have old season stuff. Walls are generally white but I've recently been experimenting with dark colours in my bathrooms and my sitting room is now a very light pink.

A minimalist version of shabby chic.
I buy 2nd hand.

7Worfs · 09/05/2023 13:26

Great thread!
I’m only starting now with a new house, so still quite bare - mostly oak furniture and brass fixtures.

Lampzade · 09/05/2023 13:33

Very elegant/ classic.. Think glass or marble tables.

Waveyhouse · 09/05/2023 13:46

Our home decor is a mixture of minimalist and bohemian design. We have a Victorian house and the period features often speak for themselves.
I don’t like lots of ‘stuff’ in a room & prefer calm and relaxing colours. I use texture in soft furnishings and like bold artwork /prints in neutral colours , we have a few mono prints with a neon accent colour that look striking against our white walls. We love big plants too and have them dotted around the house. Most of our rooms are white with the skirting boards and window frames painted a tonal colour.
Our furniture/soft furnishings are a real mix. Ikea, EBay, Made, dunelm ,charity shops, junk stores. We’ve had a couple of good bits from gumtree too.

CupEmpty · 09/05/2023 14:38

Any photos? Would love to see.

sorry but what’s “dark academia” 🤣

LoobyDop · 09/05/2023 20:06

@CupEmpty kind of steampunky and a bit gothic. As if you’d set up home in an old library and invited some vampires to stay. Lots of old books, old maps and botanical prints on the walls, that kind of thing. Could obviously be a bit insane and “look at my themed house” if you went too far, but I think little touches of it are great.

InFlagrante · 09/05/2023 21:25

I would describe ours as ‘uncurated fucked Victorian’. It looks like the houseplants and books mated and reproduced rampantly.
