Neutral colour for north facing

Quite stuck finding a paint colour for a north facing living room. The room has a north facing large bay window and is knocked through into the dining room which is south facing but only has a small window. Plain white is too stark. We’ve tried FB White Tie and it’s too creamy yellow for our liking. Sofa’s are green/teal. Not sure whether to try something like FB Dimity or if that will look too grey. Want something light and fresh, but not yellow or grey looking, or too cold 😆

Another vote for a very light pink.

Might be useful

The newer dead flat paint is amazing. If it’s such bad paint why do millions of people use it and love it

I think people are a bit caught up with the branding (myself included) their standard paint is nothing special. I think their chalky finish was a bit special when it was introduced but the whole colour being special with paints like modern emulsion and dead flat is nonsense - I have used both.

It’s more about the pigments that are used. If you look into it technically I was talking to an independent paint specialist the other day (he doesn’t have any affiliation) but says there are different types of pigmentations and materials some are dyes and some are different the way they are made. Pigment vs dye etc etc. the materials used etc.

Farrow and Ball, for all their flaws, do use good quality pigments. They have a reputation for using more Titanium Dioxide (a very expensive white dye), than other paint brands.
However, it is as much to do with the actual colours as it is the paint. Farrow and Ball use a lot of metameric colours, which basically means the colours look different in different lights. This strengthens the opinion some have about Farrow and Ball having “great depth”, and “subtle undertones”, and to be fair, the quality of the pigments does contribute to that. Some paints are very synthetic looking in their colours and the finish.

Soft pink would look good, particularly with green/ teal sofas etc. f&b tailor tack or pink ground might be really nice

Helenabelle · 20/04/2024 09:48

They don’t just whack in synthetic colours and bulk it out with low-grade fillers. Their pigments are created from natural substances that can’t be replicated synthetically.

I can’t help with a paint colour but brand wise I cannot recommend Little Greene more highly. We have F&B in a couple of rooms, Dulux in another couple and Little Greene in another 2. The LG is MILES better than the others. It is so rich and warm, went on better than the others, and has lasted far better. In fact, we are planning to paint over the F&B and Dulux rooms with LG soon.

FB Skimming Stone with ceiling painted Wevet

Despite all the talk about pigmentation- the coverage is poor compared with Little Greene or Benjamin Moore - resulting in more time and money. I have no skin in the game either. But I have to go for 4 coats with F&B where two will suffice with Little Greene.

Dulux Egyptian cotton is a good dupe for skimming stone

Have a look at dukux's heritage range - beautiful colours and great quality and half the price of F and B paints

madroid · 20/04/2024 10:45

Try a pastel shade of green or blue.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/04/2024 13:48

Agree that LG is the best paint I'veused, the coverage is excellent. They also have a small remix range that is considerably cheaper than the main range. Same colours, same paint, just made up from returns.

Just to update, this thread was a year ago so we have completed decorating now! We went with Craig and Rose Chalky White

My painter said he did not rate F&b and that Benjamin Moore was the best paint to use. We used it in our hall and it's really good. He only had to do one coat.

Helenabelle · 20/04/2024 21:57

Only problem is that it’s got a 7% sheen unless you use the other one but that’s not cleanable

Helenabelle · 01/05/2024 16:46

Doesn’t slipper satin look magnolia in a north room ?

Helenabelle · 05/05/2024 09:26

Do you have a picture?

Helenabelle · 05/05/2024 09:30

Does Craig and rose chalky white ever look yellow ?
