Light cable draped/swag across ceiling?

How to get the look without it looking like picture no 2?

Anyone have recommendations on where to source?

I already have the pendant. Electric source comes from ceiling.

I've seen some fabric braided cables which look quite nice.

yes this can look great but it’s about what cable you use to achieve it. I’ve seen some good ideas online. I wouldn’t use the standard kind designed for the usual lamps which is what pic 2 has done.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 11:33

Isn’t braided cloth cable what you use? Pic 1 is a chain so I wonder how that works?

SwapTheYforaD · 15/04/2023 11:46

Yes you're right @Whaeanui - I can't see a cable running through that chain but maybe it's well hidden.

Yes, there will be a cable that's roughly the same colour as the chain that runs inside. It might be that they've photoshopped it out, but it will be more or less like the image below. I think it might be difficult to get that kind of drape without a chain. A braided fabric cable might work, but I'm not sure it would have enough weight to fall in the same way.

I’ve seen YouTubers do this effect… if I can I will add any videos I can find from the ones I follow.

We have a couple of light fittings similar to pic 1. The cable runs up through some chunky chain - you can see the cable but it's not intrusive, and you can get old style woven lighting cable in most metallic shades. The chain hangs from some proper ceiling hooks - ours are a bit like this, which suits the style of our property. https://www.antiquelightingcompany.com/product/large-ceiling-hook-21/

Thanks all. Yes I suppose it's the heaviness of the chain that helps.

The 2 pictures here (Jim Lawrence site) suggest a braided cable is possible (my preference as it would suit our old cottage) but I can't figure out how the weight of the pendant doesn't pull the cable down and straighten the drape, if that makes sense? Is it because of the double hook do you think?

Our pendant is (photo 3) is 0.64kg so not too heavy compared to some.

Yes I would think how you hook it would prevent that

JaninaDuszejko · 15/04/2023 18:59

OK, we have this. We have a braided cable and a single hook in the ceiling. The shade on the light is a Le Klint so not heavy. When we initially hung it the weight of the bulb and shade was enough to pull it tight so I looped it as you can see in the photo so there was attractived ip of the cable between the ceiling rose and hook.

I have no idea how the people in the second image managed to get such a bent cable but I suspect adding a bulb and shade would be sufficient to sort the issue.

Super helpful @JaninaDuszejko thank you! I was thinking I'll have to get a double hook (the ones I've found aren't cheap!) and/or a gain but your solution looks really good!

*chain not gain

Glad to be of help. My electrician did not understand why I didn't just want to move the ceiling rose so it's nice to know I'm not the only person who likes this look!

Braided cable as PP have said, and the hook needs to be screwed into a joist if the light fitting is heavy
