Bedroom storage

We're planning to get built in wardrobes, ideally from a local company rather than one of the chains.

If you've got some what are your top tips for planning the storage? Good questions to ask? Anything you regret doing or not doing?!

Also not sure whether to go for one of those over bed runs of cupboards and replace the bedside cabinets too, or just do wardrobes in the alcoves either side of the chimney breast. Might make the room seem overcrowded.

I've found some lovely pics from some local companies after a bit of Googling! This is great, getting lots of ideas and it's making me think about what would work for us.

Can't do anything about it yet as we haven't had the final bill from the builders yet so no idea how much money we have! We did get the full deposit back from renting though, so that's a start.

Used B and Q and built them ourselves

RidingMyBike · 15/04/2023 09:39

The one thing that is definitely not going to happen is building them ourselves!

I'm finding it so pricey, I wish I could DIY. seriously pondering a hanging rail!

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2023 23:41

Riding any luck?

this may be a dense question but if I get furniture made, do those sorts of places only do fitted? I'd actually prefer freestanding so I can take it with me on the next move. It's not a deal breaker, just a preference.

Wow how do you break talk guidelines on a thread about wardrobes 🤣

Overhead cupboards make me feel like I am sleeping in a caravan/camper van.

I think it will feel more spacious without them.

I'd rather change the bedframe and get some under bed storage than have the overhead cupboards.

I wondered exactly this - what on earth was said?!?

EmmaEmerald · 22/04/2023 08:24

I know the first removed comment was advertising - not even relevant - but don't know about last night.

anyone know re the custom made, do they do freestanding?

RidingMyBike · 22/04/2023 08:50

I think the removed post was one that didn't answer the question and just went straight into a link to a company for under bed storage, which I hadn't asked about.

So far I've got the Hammonds brochure (and a LOT of missed calls on my mobile - you have to give your details to get the download link!). I think they'll be expensive and have also noticed you have to clear the space yourself and get the carpet up in advance of fitting. Also not impressed with the amount of attempted contact - they are obviously VERY keen to make an appointment for measuring!

Sent off for the Fittingly brochure and had a brief go with the design thing on their website - this is really interesting as you can see what changes affect the price. They also seem to offer fit it yourself or use their installers options.

But I've been working in London most of the week (live opposite end of country!) so I don't have any measurements yet!

Looking at the possible prices (and Fittingly is meant to be cheaper than the likes of Sharps and Hammonds) I think the over bed stuff would be out anyway as there's higher priorities.

I'm not sure but I get the impression maybe yes if you went with someone local who isn't limited to set ranges? Although I suppose the point is it's designed to fit in specific spaces and your next home will probably have totally different space? I know our ceiling heights here are totally different to previous house which was all eaves storage!

Also, some of them seem to just be doors and shelves in a space without backs - so the back is the wall, if that makes sense?

The more I look into this the more options I see there are!

You might be better looking for some kind of modular freestanding furniture? I've got a triple wardrobe that divides into two sections to move which made it quite practical for getting up and down stairs. This will go into DD's room once we've sorted our bedroom.

Riding interesting. I hadn't even thought of carpet as being an issue, shows how much I know. i think that's crap service if they won't do it all for you.

So for me, freestanding looks more likely. I know people say ask a local joiner but I cannot find anyone who does this. I suppose it's not profitable when people can just buy Ikea.

M&S have some wardrobes and say they have an assembly service.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/04/2023 09:07

I keep a fair bit in the bedside tables. We have a pair that have 3 drawers rather than look like a side table.

ExtremelyDetermined · 22/04/2023 10:11

If you really want storage for out of season clothes, spare bedding etc I’d really recommend changing your bed for one of those lift up divans, we did this a few years ago and the amount of storage under there is unbelievable and all out of sight. Our wardrobes aren’t fitted but take up the entire space they are in and have sliding doors, they are Nolte Mobel who have a huge rangeand the people who delivered them assembled them for us, this was 20 years ago but they have lasted really well. We also have their chests of drawers and bedside cabinets (the three drawer type). So we have lots of storage in a relatively small room.

My parents have a much bigger bedroom, all white to off-white, with huge windows so super bright, but they have the cupboards either side of the bed and over the top and it makes their room look cramped, cluttered and dated, I really wouldn’t recommend.

Has anyone tried Kutchenhaus? I walked past a branch last week and spotted they do fitted wardrobes as well as kitchens.

DH dropped into a Hammonds one last week and thought the fittings didn't feel very high quality - he also got pounced on by two people desperate to sell to him.

An update as I've been asked for one!
Didn't like Hammonds, thought it seemed a bit low quality. Didn't get a quote so no idea price wise.

Haven't made it to Kutchenhaus yet.

Got a Neville Johnson brochure and it all looks very opulent. We're not opulent! The vibe was that we wouldn't be able to afford it. They also had some terrible reviews on Trustpilot!

Spotted an ad for an independent company 15 miles away who do fitted bedroom stuff so we went to have a look when we were over that way and were impressed - cupboard doors felt a lot more solid than Hammonds and the drawers had proper bottoms. No attempt at hard sell unlike all the others, just some genuinely nice people. We've booked for them to come and quote.
