Privacy window film for bathroom?

We have a difficult bathroom layout (hopefully the plan is visible). The bath+shower is under a long low window.

Although the window does have obscured patterned glass, I know that anyone getting into the bath is visible from outside in a blurry way - not so much a problem if you are then lying down in the bath, but it feels a bit exposed when standing up to shower (can kind of scrunch self within the walled area but it's not really practical). Current solution is to lower the blind on that window but it gets really wet due to splashes from the shower and then has to be left down until it is dry.

I'm thinking of getting rid of the blind and instead adding an extra layer of frosted privacy window film? Has anyone done this with a window that will be getting frequent water splashed? I am concerned that it'll just keep peeling off or growing algae or something.

Is your blind fixed over the window recess on in it ? I would imagine if fixed close to window it wouldn't be a problem as surely you won't be splashing the glass ?

Kucinghitam · 09/04/2023 09:13

The blind is in the window recess, and yes it gets splashed - if the blind is not down, the glass does get splashed.

is it a upvc window?

if so get the glass replaced for fully obscure, looks white with a light behind it.
replacement double glazing isn’t very expensive, and with upvc is very quick to fit

in the first instance and cheaper still get some window cling from
amazon or shein. There are so many patterns, & quick to install and remove when you change your mind.

We don't have that issue but after an experience of a supposedly treated bathroom blind from John Lewis going mouldy, we got a blind online that is made of rubberised waterproof stuff - like a sort of heavy gauge shower curtain.

It is nicer than it sounds!

Blinds2go are the site I got it from.

Try Brume. 15% off this weekend. Good range of patterns, some completely obscure.

Some friends have a plastic Venetian blind in a similar position, fixed so it's semi open so the water slides off.

We did the same and it's working very well. The water just runs off and residual drips can be wiped off. Had it about a year now with no issues.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Ideally I don’t like putting the blinds down because I don’t like the look of them, but actually a waterproof Venetian blind sounds like a good option. To begin with I think I’ll try the frosted sticky window film…

@Kucinghitam - we got a white bathroom blind that is like a double layer with obscure stripes and see-through stripes. You can raise it completely but when it's lowered you can position it to have the alternate stripes or to be totally obscured. That works well for us.

I'm not sure the privacy films will work on glass that is textured and not totally flat tbh. You have to get all the bubble out. I put some in recently but on normal glass.

Is the sill deep enough to put plants on op? I have a similar issue with a toilet next to a window but I've crammed the deep sill with a jungle of tall house plants as a screen, it looks really nice.

Yes it is! I am planning to add some plants to assist in screening but I'd probably need some absolute triffids for shielding a whole standing-up showering person.

We used the privacy film stuff on our landing window and it's worked really well but you do have to be careful to get the bubbles out and I'm not sure how well it would work on a textured glass.
It's only about £10 a roll though and you would get multiple window applications out of 1 roll so give it a go and see if it works.

We have £15 Plastic Venetian blind pull it up wet hood clean with bleach spray sorts any mould replace it every couple of years

Privacy film is not a Harry Potter invisible cloak your still silhouetted when it’s dark and you have light on

Privacy film on a window in the bathroom caused gross pink mould stuff to grow on it! Really horrible. I wouldn’t do it again, especially on textured glass where it can get wet or damp underneath.

Kucinghitam · 10/04/2023 09:19

The textured side of the glass is on the inside of the double-glazed unit, so I'd be applying film to a smooth surface. But yes, one of the things I am worried about is mould 🤢 Ultimately in the long term it would be good to fully replace the double-glazed units with a more frosted more obscuring glass.

Can you fit a shelf above and add a trailing plant?
How public is the outside? I'm assuming this is as much about feeling private as preventing an actual peeping Tom.

Ooh! A shelf and trailing plants is a brilliant idea, thanks.

You're right that it's probably more about wanting the feeling of privacy than fearing weirdoes staring at my wobbly shape through the window.

Although I must say that this bathroom window, being on the side of the house, is visible from the road. Which is how I know that the current textured glass still allows outsiders to see people moving around inside that bathroom, albeit in a vague wobbly way.
