We are remodelling our kitchen and utility area, and the dream is to include a walk-in larder (similar to the attached photo), but with a pocket sliding door. If you have one, could you please show me what it looks like and if you have any tips or dos and don’ts?
I’m hoping that pretty much all the food will go in there plus kitchen gadgets (ice cream maker, slow cooker etc), cake tins etc.

Wow that's lovely!

I don't have any suggestions but following for ideas as we are considering one for our new house.

Mumsafan · 07/03/2023 14:36

In our old house we had a fabulous walk in pantry that had been built with the house 100 years before. I miss it so bloody much !!

Saz12 · 07/03/2023 17:29

My parents had one when I was little!

Keep it cool: so insulate the walls if you can, so it doesn’t gain heat from adjoining rooms. Ideally no window. If you’ve the budget, quartz shelves are cooler surfaces so good for jams, preserves etc. But screamingly expensive. Definitely keep any fridges or freezers or other heat-emitors out if possible. Open shelves with glass jars look great but many things keep better in the dark (no problem if room is windowless!).
Then there’s the “what do you want to store?” dilemma - do you need shelves that allow for tall things? Can you have relatively shallow shelves so things dont get lost at the back?

Im insanely jealous, a pantry sounds such a brilliant indulgence! I’d absolutely love one.

We bought a house with a pantry, although not as nice as the picture. Our shelves are really deep so we can store lots but it can be hard to see what is at the back. I've bought those shelf organisers for tins etc The single ceiling light also means that the shelves are dark so ideally you want lighting on the shelves. We have shelves going up to the ceiling means I have to store a folding stool in there to be able to reach stuff, so you might want a place for that. I love our pantry. We initially thought we would find the lack of wall cupboards an issue but the pantry holds so much it really isn't.

SeaToSki · 11/03/2023 01:13

The wall shelves should be shallow so you dont loose stuff in the back. Make the heights adjustable so you can customize for bottles etc. No cupboard doors as they get in the way. I had lots of countertop as it was brilliant for storing food platters for parties before you wanted to serve stuff and whisking the detritus away. Dont be tempted to put a dishwasher in there, it just adds extra work

Rummikub · 11/03/2023 01:27

My parents had an understairs pantry which stores loads.
Id really love a corner larder cupboard.

Planning and measuring. The height and depth of shelves is really important to fit storage jars, packets and tins. So I have a mix of height and depth. Draw in pencil on the walls to get an idea of how they will work.

Shelf strength and support. Make sure it has enough brackets for the weight you want to store.

Choose storage containers while planning. So you have shelves to fit. Mix of wooden boxes, plastic boxes and glass jars. Plus bottle storage.

Wooden slatted storage is great for veg especially if it's dark.

Hooks are handy too. String bags of veg etc.

Think of light, how the door will open and where yoù will stand.

Agree with cold. Plus avoid anything electric that gives off heat and or damp.

Shelves don't have to be the same. Wood, stone and tiled all work. I love some of the wallpaper and tiled backs too.

Lots of good ideas! Thank you so much!

We have one and whilst it’s not perfect, it works really hard!

I would have as deep sleeves as you can - to avoid losing things at the back, you could have tubs or crates or baskets or whatever to group items in. I would go as far up the ceiling as possible to maximise space.

I have a tall freezer in mine, which is really useful, and four stacking ikea recycling rates with flip lids on an angle.

I also have a wine rack; hooks for bags for life, coffee pod recycling bag and kids aprons; and a step.

I don’t have one, but seriously want one. Have been looking at Canadian property for sale as possibly immigrating and it’s one of my must haves for a home over there. I saw a pantry in a house the other day and just loved it. Not huge but it just really appealed to be. Pics attached.

Looks amazing! So useful to be able
to store small appliances and food in one place.
I’m attaching a few photos from Pinterest of other pantries I love!

We have a utility room, also with pocket door, so can't comment on the larder aspect of it, but just wanted to highlight an issue we're having. I absolutely love the pocket door - its actually an oak 30s panelled door to match the other doors in the house and I've raved about the idea of pocket door - freeing up space etc on lots of posts. Its been in situ for about 5 years without a glitch.

However, its just broken - something has gone wrong within the "pocket" so the door only slides halfway into the pocket (there is a blockage stopping it sliding in all the way). The issue we have is that the wall which has the pocket in it has a built in fridge freezer on one side, and the boiler on the other side. We can't therefore easily get into the way to see what's blocking the pocket.

Obviously with the benefit of hindsight, we'd have kept at least one side of the wall housing the pocket accessible - just something to think about in your planning.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/03/2023 11:14

We have 2 big double cupboards - one with pots and appliances, one with food

vrouge · 17/03/2023 18:59

@Africa2go thanks for the heads up about pocket door planning! We are also planning a walk in pantry (with a 30s pocket door to match the existing doors as well) and hadn't future proofed access to either side as we will have fridge freezer on one side and the UFH manifold on the other so I'll check with our builder if it will be accessible in the future.

I'm currently planning the pantry with open base units and open wooden shelving at the top - it's hard to find open base units off the shelf without manipulation by our fitter and we can't afford bespoke for the pantry as the kitchen gets the nice units so the pantry needs to be on the cheap but maximum storage

FerretFumbler · 20/03/2023 16:28

@Crikeyalmighty please could you tell me where are your units from? You have exactly what I am after!! Big tall cupboards to hide everything!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/03/2023 16:47

@FerretFumbler sadly I couldn't tell you- it's our very lovely 'rented ' house. The kitchen larder cupboards sold it to me (I still have normal base and wall cupboards too) --but these just work so well. Stuff at right height and enough room for day to day and posher pots too and all my glasses one side- and all my dry goods food the other cupboard plus room for stuff like slow cooker, food processor

Whichnumbers · 20/03/2023 16:54

I worked for a couple that built their own home and included a pantry.
the first section was doorless and the fridge was placed here, opposite the fridge was cookery books and kitchen appliances, then a door to the pantry which was built to cool even in summer (39 degrees and still cool) they had marble shelving on one level about the same height as kitchen top and that was deep gir lots of larger items. Then smaller shelves above fir add mallee jars of items

TeaAndStrumpets · 20/03/2023 17:30

We are planning one for a newbuild. It will be on a north facing wall with a small velux in the sloping ceiling. We plan to have a large freezer in there, and a large sink and dishwasher, so obviously we will use it like a scullery as well as for food storage. Because we are having the dishwasher there, we plan to store crockery as well. We are having underfloor heating but not in the pantry.
