Roman blinds go mouldy

They cost a fortune! But the strings stretched ( I think) so they are lopsided and the side near the glass is black with mould.
the glass is wet every day.
I don’t want to spend gazillions again for this to happen again.
do I hang them further away from glass? Can I wash and restring?
help!

The blinds should have a care label which shows if they are washable providing they're not homemade. That said, the mould may not wash out. The alternative to hanging the blinds against the glass is to hang them at the front of the window recess from the wall above the window. Blinds hung like that are usually bigger though or they won't block the light.

I've made loads of roman blinds. If you're at the stage of black linings there is an answer but it's hard. I'd have to take the blind down, unstitch the lining and wash/bleach it before putting it together again. But if the problem is condensation on the glass, as long as that issue isn't fixed, the lining will go black again. Probably quite quickly. Strings stretching can be a thing if the strings are old or made from very cheap cord. It's not difficult to install new strings but it is time consuming.
Washing the blinds as a whole is likely to lead to uneven shrinkage unless you took them to the dry cleaner. Hanging further away from the glass will help with black mould but not necessarily stop it altogether, especially if you're being thoughtful with heating due to the energy crisis. I hang my blinds about 2inches away so they just skim the window handles.

Eradicating the moisture is the first port of call here.

Thanks all!
we’ve just had the windows mended but it hasn’t helped at all. And can’t afford to double glaze.
I guess I’ll try washing and lining with black mould colour cloth! And hanging them as far as possible from the glass. The glass is soaking every morning. Grrrr.
thank you!, and well done for making blinds, gosh!

God just open your windows and dry the glass. You can't complain about mould if you do nothing to prevent it.

Oh yeah!
didnt occur to me! To busy trying to keep the warmth in!
Thanks!

Moisture traps are also useful - those plastic tubs that "catch" condensation. You can buy them on Amazon.

Dehumidifier?

Moomoola · 26/02/2023 20:56

Omg! I left the windows open a teeny bit last night and…NO WATER!!!!!!!
im gobsmacked! And the blinds ( and three duvets) kept out most of the draughts. Wohhhh!
thank you!

Hi I’ve got both kinds of blind in my house - inside the recess (right next to glass), x2 rooms, and outside the recess x2 rooms.

the ones outside the recess do not have mould on. One of the right next to the glass ones does, it is a bedroom one and we do have condensation every morning. I now open all the windows wide every morning for about 20 mins, and then dry all the windows with a towel. Also have the heating on more. It has solved the problem but if I were making more blinds I would go for the outside recess ones every time. Those rooms where the 2 of those type are have bad condensation too but they haven’t got any mould on them.

Oh thank you biggild worth knowing!
we have stupid windows that are straight up, recessed into a sloping recess. So have to be innys. Will keep as far away as possible from glass tho, that’s ve useful, 😊

Am trying ikea black out blinds. About£5 and one side seems to be shiny, waterproof. I’m hanging them inside the other blinds hoping water will stick to them not the cloth. Worth a try!
