Just wondering why Crittal doors and windows are popular.
I just think the horizontal lines spoil a view out.

Exactly this, if we all worried decor would date none of us would decorate ever and where is the joy in that? Honestly everything is dated within 5 minutes of it appearing on instagram according to the the mumsnet massive anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

I blame Instagram for everything looking dated so quickly. Does anyone really decorate more often than every 5 years? I'm more of an every 10 years kind of person because I hate painting.

This!! Instagram managed to “fast fashion” the interiors scene

We have Crittal original 1930s window - they are in need of repairs but single glazed so very crafty. We love the character but they feel so inefficient. Is there anything you can do if you want to preserve the original but make more energy efficient aside from secondary glazing?

lauralauralaura3 · 28/02/2023 20:58

drafty not crafty!

I blame bloody MN - the minute something becomes vaguely popular - everyone pounces on it - declares it naff...they pour scorn on your choices declaring their own to be the "right" thing. You won't meet anyone in real life who will speak like this about interiors - you won't find anyone who's been to your house with bi-fold doors declare they are naff as they walk into your kitchen. And the thing is these people are probably living in shit holes that you'd hate.
We've just moved and I need some ideas for making the place feel more ours - but I should know better than to read interiors threads because they always make me annoyed.

We have some. They were installed in 1952 so nothing to do with current trends.

Erm relax.

I like Crittall windows/doors… just in the right style of property. Just like the faux panelling, in the right style property it looks fab.

If you like something go for it, however there is no denying that interiors has gone down the fast fashion route and judging from the comments on all socials, it’s not the “mumsnet effect”, at all lols

I love them but only in very modern or 1930s homes. My block of flats was built in the 1930s ... wishful thinking we could change all our windows from Upvc installed 20 years ago :(

RinklyRomaine · 31/05/2023 17:51

We have an aluminium version of them in our extension. With a herringbone floor. Shock horror. It is a 30's house however and they are beautiful.

We used secondary glazing to get around this draft issue while retaining original crittal. It’s very unobtrusive and really effective. It also has cut down a lot of noise from outside which we hadn’t even realised was happening. I would recommend

Clingfilm · 02/06/2023 09:05

In the late 90s when councils started replacing crittal windows for pvc, all the people who'd bought their houses were 'revealed' as they still had the metal windows. So it's always been a status symbol of sorts 😄

Madisifescu · 07/06/2023 09:41

There are a few slim/ elegant ~crittall style doors.
We did our with Bespoke Glazing Design. And we love them.

Stalkedbyzombies · 07/06/2023 09:46

I saw a property where someone had installed one as a badly fitted internal partition. It was really obvious that they had picked it up from a yard and found a use for it because they really wanted to be in on the trend. It looked hideous.

I find that I really have to rein myself in with these tasteful trends.

Me too. I love the look of bifolds, crittal, herringbone floors, panelling, yes even grey paint too. And open plan. Many people like these things actually... I wonder how stylish are the people who keep on making these comments and how their houses look like. Do they not like just because they're popular and they like to feel their tastes are very special or are they really special?

bussteward · 12/06/2023 19:29

I like them, particularly if they’re a colour rather than black.

There are some shockers on instagram though: the same crowd doing the shit MDF panelling also do internal Crittal-style with black rubber tape stuff, truly terrible. And marble sticky back plastic on their kitchen counters, and gold spray-painted Ikea bar carts. Whole houses that must feel like the Crossroads set.

KateJ4545 · 08/07/2023 08:32

I suspect that authentic crittle doors, with thin steel frames, look amazing especially as an internal divide where you want to zone a room but not block it off completely.

But unless they're authentic or at least steel I'm a bit mixed about how they look as an exterior door. With enough light and thin enough frames they can probably look absolutely lovely, I do like the look. But with the thicker aliminium frames, would the extra light and space created from not having the bars not offer more?

Ultimately, what's lovely about crittle is their heritage, and before they were so on trend, I'd imagine seeing real crittle doors in a home would be unique, a real design feature. Can we say of the aliminium ones that are now everywhere?

I'm asking because whilst I have said all the above, I do still think about them. But I can't afford real crittle so I know ultimately, I'd go for an option that offered more glass/light. But I think we can safely say the crittle look is a trend and not a unique design feature, but trends can stick around for a while.
