Redesigning a tiny box room for a teen

Hoping for some ideas here. We need to redo my DD’s room, she’s 12 and her room does not work for her. She is in the box room, 248cm long, 212 cm wide roughly. Currently in a high sleeper lengthways down the room, with desk and drawers underneath. Just about enough floor space left over for a Trofast unit opposite.

Her high sleeper can be converted into a single, so I’m thinking of moving it so it goes widthways across the room under the window, rather than length ways. Then we’d have more option to use the walls and hopefully give her an actual wardrobe and drawers. She uses a desk downstairs so I don’t think she’d need one in her bedroom. Although I’m conscious she might want more privacy to study when she hits GCSE time.

Does anyone have a similar size room and how have you made it work for your DC? Any clever desk ideas? She’s not that bothered about wardrobe space because most of her clothes don’t need to be hung. But she does own a billion books and would ideally like space for those. Any ideas for layout gratefully received.

I'm on Facebook and one feature is Reels. For some reason most of the reels I am shown are how to organise small rooms furniture wise (approx 1 min animations or videos). I am not looking at organising a small room furniture wise so have no idea why I am being shown these but they are fascinating! So I have looked at a few and the creativity is astonishing. You might find a few extra thoughts there.

DS (12) also has a small room, although luckily has a built-in wardrobe which really helps. We bought him the Slakt bed from Ikea which has 4 wide, deep drawers and some space for books etc underneath. We then used Ikea narrow Metod kitchen units (20cm wide) to fit perfectly into the gap between the foot of the bed and the wall. They're quite deep, but actually you can fit a surprising number of books in them. We stacked 2 x 80cm tall ones on top of each other and DH fixed them to the wall. You could also think about wall mounting shelf units on one of the walls. That way you still have floor space for other furniture... Something like the Eket boxes might be good, as you can then stack inside them and on top of them....

Think of a small bedroom a bit like it's a caravan. They usually make use of all the available space, with lots of small wall cupboards for example.

@BoxRoomRefurb my daughter is in our box room and the window wall is actually smaller than yours. Ours is 195cm across the window, so we have just shoehorned a single bed under the window and it touches both walls. Our only radiator is also along this bit of wall, so she’s right up against it in bed.

As we walk in, our door is on the same wall as yours but on the right side of the wall, not the left. We walk in and behind the door on the left is a double wardrobe with sliding doors. If we do a 90 degree left turn from walking through the door, the mirrored wardrobe doors face us and because it is wider than deep, it gives a small amount of floor space between the front of the wardrobe and the door. My daughter has some pictures on this bit of spare wall.

If we walk through the door again and face the window, on the right side, in the gap between the door and the bed is a small desk. We got it from B&M’s at Christmas and it’s very compact but with a shelf underneath so it provides extra storage. My daughter can sit at this and is really comfortable.

My daughter has a tv on the wall at the foot of her bed and underneath, had a narrow shelf. It is actually a white ikea picture rail, but my daughter puts art and other bottles and deodorant on it.

There isn’t a lot of floor space, but surprising it isn’t cramped and feels really cosy. She has everything she needs with a bed, desk and double wardrobe. To make the storage work even better, we bought a small set of drawers and put them in the bottom of half the wardrobe. She uses this for underwear, pjs etc.

We were very restricted in buying a bed as only a divan would fit, however, with that extra bit of space, I’d try and get an ottoman bed in as it will provide storage underneath and is easy to access. Our window wall is so small that we had to buy a headboard and fix it to the wall above the bed, as there wasn’t room to attach it to the back of the bed.

I hope that helps a bit.
