Please say yes!!! En-suite shower has left an oval shaped leak patch on kitchen ceiling it's roughly about 8 inches long
Best way to deal with it please without painting whole ceiling x

you might be able to but stain might come through again but you can try if it doesn't work then you'll need stain block then more paint

WestendVBroadway · 20/01/2023 18:32

We tried this, but the stain kept reappearing. We had to seal it was some Bostic? Sealant stuff first.

Choconut · 20/01/2023 18:33

I would prime it first, damp patches don't paint well, then if you match the colour to the ceiling - but do you know exactly what it is? If not then you probably will be able to see that you've painted a patch in certain lights/angles at least.

Sand it, seal it.
If you have some paint left, you almost certainly can. If it's brilliant white, probably. If it's another shade, probably not.

Motelschmotel · 20/01/2023 18:41

how long ago was your ceiling painted? In the kitchen, if it was a while ago and not amazingly well ventilated, I'd expect it to have changed shade from the original colour unfortunately.

Make sure you use that special paint first or it will come through, I would try and see what it looks like, at worse you will just have to paint it all

Greying · 20/01/2023 18:46

Stain block paint first. Then follow my example and fail to bother to paint over it so you have a bright white patch of stain block instead for several years. Just don’t look up too much?

Patanat · 20/01/2023 18:47

You can only try (after sealing as per pps).

We touched up scratches, scrapes and even a bit of replastering over a period of about eight years by buying B&Q samples. It’s not supposed to work as batches differ, but it never failed us and recently painted bits were undetectable. Good old Dulux Timeless. This wasn’t in a kitchen, however, and if it’s brilliant white any change of colour may be more obvious.

Watto1 · 20/01/2023 18:47

If you have any gloss paint , that will work just as well as the special damp seal paint. Paint over the damp stain with the gloss and then go over it with the emulsion once it is thoroughly dry.

Lonelycrab · 20/01/2023 18:48

I’d try Zinnser Bin on it, good as it gets for stain blocking. But maybe try and dry the damp patch out as much as possible, (personally I’d get a step ladder and angle a fan heater at it for a while). Normal paint on top a few days later.

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/01/2023 18:50

Use a stain blocker then paint over it.
You'll have a small noticeable patch but paint the whole ceiling in daylight later in the year.

pippapipps · 20/01/2023 18:57

Thanks everyone for the fast replies...for person who asked when the kitchen ceiling was painted it was done in summer of 2019 by painter decorator's
I have some zinnser bin as someone suggested so maybe I'll give it a week to try out properly and give it a go
Really hope it works I could do without the hassle and expense it's a tight month..fingers crossed

See how you get on. It might annoy you, but sometimes you have to let things wait.

pippapipps · 20/01/2023 19:05

@WhoppingBigBackside very true I try not to let things faze me too much these days haha thanks x

If you paint over the patch with gloss paint that kind of seals it then with the paint over the rest of the ceiling .

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 20/01/2023 19:13

Let it dry. Let it dry let it dry. Completely like until the middle of summer. Then Zinser, then let that dry then paint.

You won't be able to tell.

Ponderingtosk · 20/01/2023 19:17

i made sure it was dry, fortunately we have another bathroom we could use, I did stain block, let it thoroughly dry, then white gloss, and then finally a satin emulsion and it’s been fine ever since. Took me about three days I think so to let everything dry properly.

Furries · 23/01/2023 05:16

I’d say no. You need to use a stain block on it and then paint the ceiling.
