What to do with overlooked french doors in bedroom?

dingdongfi · 19/01/2023 13:57

I have a bedroom with two french doors into my bedroom that are overlooked by neighbours. I'd ideally like an option to add some privacy during the day but don't want to make the room dark.

What would people do here?

  • Get rid of the curtains and have grey shutters (but might make the room dark)?
  • Vertical blinds
  • Regular blinds
  • Magic Roller Blind (that lets all the light through but provides privacy when needed)
  • Get better curtains and leave as is - just close them when needed. The current curtains from dunelm look awful despite being brand new

Any ideas to improve the current setup gratefully received!! 😀

Are you against filming the glass?

KnickerlessParsons · 19/01/2023 14:00

I think I'd get some voile curtains you can pull across in the daytime, then some lighter (in colour and in fabric weight) curtains to sit on top of them to draw at night time.

I'd love to have windows like that in my bedroom!

MyGirlDaisy · 19/01/2023 14:03

I was going to suggest putting film on the glass too. Or day and night blinds?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 19/01/2023 14:06

Depending on the angle you are overlooked from, blinds might only need to be pulled down to half and still let light in while giving you privacy.

Otherwise, my first thought was filming the glass. Or voiles.

FlounderingFruitcake · 19/01/2023 14:07

We had that in our old flat. We had voiles and heavier curtains.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 19/01/2023 14:08

I filmed our windows as our neighbour has security cameras which are directed at them. (talking to them had zero effect)
It works, so long as it is lighter outside than inside the room. Works brilliantly for daytime. Downside is that it is awkward to fit and needs patience and ideally two people to tackle the job, but can very easily be removed if you decide to.
Blinds /voiles/ nets are also good, but do make it harder to see out and get light in.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 19/01/2023 14:09

Definitely film. Probably mirrored, but you could just do frosted if you're not bothered about seeing out

Wheretheskyisblue · 19/01/2023 14:10

I would add roman blinds to screen the top half of the window as that looks like where you are overlooked and look into more planting in the garden or a pergola. It would be a shame to add voiles or film and completely block the view.

Another vote for this! Very sheer white underneath what you’ve got. Dunelm sell some nice ones I think.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 19/01/2023 14:29

Privacy film can be opaque or can be one way film - in that you can see out but not see in. Some one way films have thermal properties and uv protection. (@Wheretheskyisblue )

larchforest · 19/01/2023 14:31

This is what net curtains are for.

YukoandHiro · 19/01/2023 14:33

Film the glass, or replace it for proper opaque glass if you can afford it

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 19/01/2023 14:39

You can get really beautiful voiles and lace curtains, which filter the light and even colour it, as well as baffling the neighbours.

coralgeo · 19/01/2023 14:40

Privacy film and voile curtains.

KnickerlessParsons · 19/01/2023 17:05

Wouldn't film prevent the OP from seeing out?

No. One way film looks exactly like glass from one side - from the room to outside. But from outside to in, it just looks like a sheet of smooth silver foil. Opaque film, does block the view both ways.
2 different products with different outcomes, but applied the same way!

dingdongfi · 20/01/2023 14:29

Thanks all - i hadn't realised you could get films for existing glass. Will check out some of the options suggested above!

I have static frosted film, very easy to apply with no adhesive.

Mammaplanner · 21/01/2023 23:21

Perfect fit blinds would be good
