Kitchen colour thread!

We are looking to update our kitchen and deciding what colour to go for. I was thinking something safe and pale then I saw a forest green kitchen and really love it! It's more leaning to a hint of blue than a true royal green iyswim.
My only concern is longevity, I'd not be replacing anything for a minimum of 10 years.
I've a tendency to play it safe with a lot of things. This would be bold.
Black tiled galaxy type floor and oak worktop which I would keep, just replace the doors and whatever panels needed it. Would it look too dark with the floor, I find things so hard to visualise.

What's going to still look good in a few years, play it safe or go bold?

I really wanted navy or olive green, but was worried it would outdate. So I went for neural and painted the walls instead

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 07/01/2023 22:25

We went for Cornflower Blue (DIY Kitchens, which is more of a duck egg blue, and I love it. Looks different depending on the light. I wanted to avoid black, white and grey, and was worried about navy being too dark for the room and very fashionable.

I think greens of all shades look great with oak worktops. Go for what you love!

User6761 · 07/01/2023 22:54

I love green kitchens! Ours is navy with light grey wall units. It's a dark room so all navy would have been too much. It probably will date, most things do eventually, but I like it and wanted something 'bold' having lived with plain cream kitchens for so many years. Three years on and I've no regrets.

RidingMyBike · 08/01/2023 08:33

We are in the middle of having a dark green kitchen installed - I really wanted sage green but it wasn't available in the range we chose. The kitchen has windows along one side so I don't think it'll be too dark. It's a Howdens one.

How long are you planning to live there? We weren't as bothered about it going out of fashion as long as we loved it. It's a long term house so by the time we sell it'll be an old kitchen!

Justkoko · 08/01/2023 12:11

We've no plans to move, I'd love a stylish kitchen.
In place and staying:
Black shiny floor tiles with metallic specks.
Solid oak worktop
White ceramic sink

It screams traditional. I'd love to mix it up a bit. It's not a big kitchen so would love to do something to give it a bit of wow factor.

I worry about it being too heavy/dark with the black floor and oak worktops. I don't want a farmhouse traditional look, I'd like something sleeker. I think I may not succeed though with those fixtures.

What colour and style units would you go for? I'm between handleless matt slab type doors or shaker. The very obvious option is cream shaker but...it's not very exciting is it?

Black shiny floor tiles scream modern to me, I would go with gloss for units and match the worktop to the floor. Oak and black gloss tiles are 2 completely different styles.

Justkoko · 08/01/2023 13:47

They're not the huge shiny tiles, only smaller like 30cmx30cm. So they don't seem super modern to me. I would rather not rip then out as they are natural stone but I'm struggling with colours!

Aaargh, help!? Though must admit that picture is much more orangey than my worktop, I think it's a cooler shade.

Pale blue? It’d be nice with the black shiny floor.
Some sort of spice colour? Very scary, could be great (or awful!).

Bunnyfuller · 09/01/2023 22:50

Sparkly and black weren’t something that traditional homes had on the floor. It’s not traditional, sorry op. Sparkly black granite worktop would go amazing with that. Google it, see what comes up

Wakk · 09/01/2023 22:59

We went for quite neutral with a dark wall. I love navy but it's everywhere and I think it'll be outdated very soon.

Dark green sounds good though.

Justkoko · 10/01/2023 15:42

@Bunnyfuller I see what you mean but it's not very obviously glittery like some of the galaxy granite, it's specks of bronzey gold and not in your face.
I'm between handle less and shaker. And still can't decide on colour as it seems like the only appropriate colour is white or cream!

I'm not looking to change the tiles or worktop. It's granite flooring and solid oak worktop nd ceramic white sink that's only been in a few years.

I'm terrible at picturing the colours! I'll end up going safe and white or cream!
Black, white, oak and a touch of leafy green in plants or paint? Earthy but minimalist?
Will forest green units clash with the black floor?

Have you looked at dark reds for the cabinets? The flecks in the floor are a warm shade, and I think the cooler forest green wouldn't sit well.

RampantIvy · 10/01/2023 17:22

I needed light colours for our kitchen so my units are a pale sage green, and we have a pale wood effect floor, and a very pale ice blue walls.

AnekeSchuss · 10/01/2023 17:39

Red.

FurAndFeathers · 10/01/2023 21:55

People have been saying that navy and green kitchens are outdated for at least 5 years 😁

I had a dark green kitchen fitted 4 years ago. Still love it. Could give a fig for fashion

it would look nice with your floor and worktop.

Justkoko · 11/01/2023 14:02

I'd never go for red. Its just not me at all.

I said exactly that @Justkoko - then I saw the red Bertazzoni range cooker and was smitten! I couldn't have an all red kitchen but am delighted with our mix of blue/cream cabinets and red Bertazzoni...

We bought a house with F&B Radicchio on the walls, black granite worktop and cream cabinets. I would never have chosen it but I love it

SwishSwishBisch · 12/01/2023 21:43

If you’ve no plans to move and don’t consider your own tastes fickle or prone to changing quickly, just go with the colour you want OP! No one else’s opinion really matters

Someo · 12/01/2023 21:44

We went with Overtly Olive by Dulux for our kitchen.

Weefreetiffany · 12/01/2023 21:49

deep Pink would work well if you’re not up for red

Ikeameatballs · 12/01/2023 21:52

Can you bring a couple of doors in forest green and cream?

Ikeameatballs · 12/01/2023 21:54

Meant to say can your bring them home to place next to the floor and worktop?

Greengreengreenblue · 12/01/2023 21:55

This is our kitchen when it was first installed. We used DIY kitchens colour match service. Not to everyone's taste I'm sure but I love it and definitely don't regret it.
