Hi All

Looking for ideas on what colours to use to paint my dining room. The idea is to use a colour pair, a dark one and a light one. I'd love a darker colour for the whole room but this room does not have sufficient light so needs a lighter overall colour and then accents through a darker colour. The dark colour would go on the wall above the mantlepiece and on the beam, and the lighter colour would be for the alcoves and the rest of the room. Picture attached.

Please suggest your creative ideas!

Ive just done my daughters bedroom like this, it looks gorgeous and the white really pops against the navy. Amazing in period style rooms.

Somebody with a better flair for design will come along and tell you that navy is a pass trend but I still think it looks lovely

It depends. What colour are the curtains, carpet and furniture?

RinklyRomaine · 04/01/2023 18:42

What colours are the tiles in the fire surround? Mine have pale yellow and mid blue and we have blue accents in the room, it's nice. Navy is a bit 'old' now but I love it. My SiL has done black in a similar room with pinks in tiny accents and it looks lovely.

There are no curtains - room is too dark to have them and looks onto the garden so not necessary. Floor is natural wooden planks. The fireplace is dark grey. The furniture will be also kind of natural wood colour.

My latest favourite colour is sulking room pink. I've used it and I love it. Could be worth a shot?

A deep sage or bay colour to link to the garden and not stray too far from the grey? I'm biased, our new kitchen extension is in a mix of Dulux Stone Green, deep silver sage, Rock salt and natural woods.

I've seen some gorgeous dark forest/emerald greens recently teamed with white alcoves.

What direction is the room facing ?

I really like the stone green. Would it work in a north facing room?

I LOVE stone green so I'm not very impartial. Our kitchen is south facing and very bright but we do have units in the colour in our utility which is windowless and I still love it. I suspect you could also pair it with a warmer white. Rock salt is very cool.

Personally I think the common advice to embrace the dark is the best, personally as it’s a dining room, I’d go for a deep olive or navy.and then use art work with bright colours or a white background and mood lighting Ie floor lighting etc to Really enhance it.

If it's a dark colour I would use a dark but warm colour for the whole room, rather than fighting it. I'm with @JuneOsborne Sulking would look great, but I'd take it around the room. Either with accents in off white or for a bit more pop with De Nimes or a grayish sage green.
