Can you really put Ruggable rugs in the washing machine?

I think the time has come to replace the big rug we have in the living room. It's quite a thick pile and we have dogs that chew toys, eat treats and generally roll around on it. I've used a carpet cleaner but not sure that's getting all the dirt - and smells - out.

I'm interested in a Ruggable but very sceptical that they can be washed properly in a standard sized washing machine. We'd need one of the bigger sizes (to cover the ugly floor tiles that were in place when we moved in).

And do they really stay in place on the rubber mat?

Grateful for any advice!

We've just purchased a ruggable rug. It looks fab, and the rubber backing seems to grip really well (it's been down less than a day though!) Ours sits on carpet with a dining table on the top and it's easy to move the dining chairs over it. Although they are washable ours is too big for a domestic machine (there's some info on the website about that) so may not be as easy to wash when the time comes.

@AngelasEyelash - does your rug lie smoothly? If I get one it will be anchored by sofas/armchairs on 3 sides, but I'm wondering if the thin top layer might still wrinkle as people walk across it/dogs roll around on it etc

It says on the website that even the 275 x 365 rug will go in a home washing machine. That's their biggest size. I think we would need the next size down.

US standard domestic washing machines are around double the capacity of UK domestic machines. I would check the weight capacity of your machine and the weight of the rug, and also the height of the pile and dimensions of the rug. Try to imagine scrunching it up into your machine and allowing water to swish around.

Maybe you could take it to the launderette?

@Motelschmotel - that's really helpful thanks.
Our washing machine will take 8kg, which means I could go up to 185 x 275. Anything bigger (rectangular) needs a washing machine that can take up to 14 kg.

I wouldn't put one in my machine, even if technically it fit. I'd just take it to a laundrette, with huge commercial machines.
