LEGO around the house

We have just got our youngest into LEGO and see it as a great way to engage their creativity while keeping them away from the TV! It can be quite expensive, and LEGO has certainly changed since I was young – we used to mix up the pieces to make weird and wonderful creations, but now they are collectable, and ours prefers to keep their ships and vehicles intact. They also look good around the house. It’s nice to see our youngest take some pride in the models they have made. We’ve started putting the sets in these display cases to keep them safe and tidy.

What are people’s experiences with LEGO, are there any other good creative toys for children to play with people reccomend?

We have piles of Lego everywhere, any nice sets are displayed for a few months and then broken down and rotated

We have a lot of Lego. It is restricted to certain areas of the house (the kids' rooms). They have boxes to put it away in. If they want to display something they put it on the shelf/desk. If they are working on something, it goes on a tray.

As for the kits, they always start by building that, but after a few days the thrill goes off and it gets modified/ adapted into something imaginary and they seem to spend a lot more time fiddling/playing like that.

Lego is really the main thing that our kids are into, although they also enjoy Playmobil, marble runs, gravitrax, snap circuits, dressing up clothes and NERF guns.

How old is your child? The 2 sets in the picture are the collectable more aimed at adult sets.
If you want your child to just build from their imagination then the classic sets are the best (Yellow box theme).
I love the Classic range.

That's right, they were built with a lot of parental assistance! The display cases are from here, FYI.

We have got a few of the random brick sets, too which they enjoy. We were also thinking of getting a big box of random LEGO perhaps on eBay for them, clean it out etc.

sorry but collectable lego in cases seems so dull to me. Lego is meant to be broken up and re-arranged into lots of imaginative things.

we have one big set of open shelves (bit like these but not)

boxes of lego on the bottom two levels (sorted by colour & function - we have a lot of boxes) and then completed models on the 3 upper levels. when there is no space, a completed model has to get broken up to make way for the next. it keeps things interesting.
