IKEA PAX wardrobe questions

Need new wardrobes for our bedroom and looking at Pax from IKEA. For those of you with them, I have two questions:

Did you remove the skirting board so it was flush against the wall?

Did you build it yourself? Looking at the prices for getting them built for you, it says £110 (hinged doors, 200cm wide) PER COMBINATION - what does that mean?

Hi, we kept skirting boards and built ourselves, which was quite easy.

fatsinglereadytomingle · 29/11/2022 10:17

I didn't remove the skirtings only out of sheer laziness it doesn't cause any issues with the stability of the wardrobes.

I did build them with the help of then DH the carcass was a breeze to build, i have the sliding doors which were an absolute pain in the arse to build and fit it may have been the start if the reason we're getting a divorce no idea about their pricing though

We kept skirting but put a packing piece of wood in the gap so they look more fitted.

Also built ourselves - we had to do this in the upright position because we got the extra tall ones so they are only an inch or so off the ceiling - which adds to the fitted effect.

Built them ourselves. It was time consuming and a definite two man job for us. The carcass was easy but we had a lot of fittings.

We left the skirting board on the walls. We should have taken it off. The alcove was so tight that we ended up pushing them into place with brute force and ignorance. I'm not sure they'll ever come out again.

My DH and I have kitted out a dressing room, and a large walk in with pax units.

in both cases we left the skirts at the back, and removed them at the sides so there was no visible gap. Trim the skirts and put back at the front of the kickboard. We used a chock at the back to secure them with the wall anchors.

Theyre a fantastic product. This is our latest pax project.

We didn't take off the skirting board, we trimmed the bottom bit of the side panels to fit neatly over it. But we have very neat simple skirting boards here. For bigger ones, I would definitely remove a section

They look great, I’ve just knocked through from my bedroom into the ‘baby room’ with the intention of having a walk in, how did you fit the corners? What unit did you use?

ReadyForPumpkins · 29/11/2022 10:41

We didn't remove skirting board and DH did it. If you pay a professional, it depends if they are carpenters or just flat pack furniture builders. If using a carpenter, have a look at ikea hack ideas and get them to make PAX look like proper build in wardrobes. They can build custom skirting and coving around the PAX.

The corner will be just empty without any wardrobe. Alternatively, you can have one in front of the other, and have hanging space on the one behind. It's like fiting kitchen units. It all depends on how good you are at carpentry. DH is not good, and I'm completely useless. All I can do is hold the pieces when DH tells me to.

Merrow · 29/11/2022 10:47

We have Pax carcasses but had a local carpenter cut them to size (odd sloping ceilings) and make doors / end pieces etc so they look built in. We're really pleased with them! They are massive, so if building yourself then I'd think you need two strong people to do the lifting.

oh thank you so much , you’ve just resolved the problem I was having.

sausage767 · 29/11/2022 10:51

@Lurkerlot the left side and the back are the full deep - 58cm? 238cm tall. The right side with the drawers and shoe/shelves are the shallower units - 35cm? We didn’t use the specific corner units, they’re just the standard frames. In the corners the sides go past the back wall unit. I just put things I don’t access often in the corners, like evening dresses and long coats in the single hang.

My DH has the back wall and the drawers/shelves on the immediate right, the rest is mine. 😂

I’m still waiting on the 100cm wide pull out tray for accessories, they’re out of stock. But these are the jewellery stacks I have to go on the tray. The inner organiser components for pax are terrific.

@Lurkerlot you can just bring them forward off the walls to fill the space if you need to, you lose a little bit of unit but much easier than trying to trim them to size. The come in 50, 75 and 100 cm widths so you can get a combo to fit most spaces quite well.

This house was a new custom build, I knew I would use pax units so made sure the walk in space was the exact size to fit the standard pax units.

sausage767 · 29/11/2022 11:07

These are the units we installed in my dressing room in our previous house. It’s L-shaped on 2 walls. This has the actual shaped corner unit (with the mirrored door), but they don’t make that any more. These were a nightmare to fit in an old house with rather uneven floors and walls.
