Farrow and Ball colour scheme for hallway help!

We're decorating our north facing hallway. It gets little natural light and only has two pendant lights so is a bit dingy. It's currently a horrible cream colour above and below the dado rail with all woodwork in what looks like a dirty white. I hate it! I'm thinking embrace the dark by going for a deep colour, paired with a neutral. Current thinking is Farrow and Ball Berrington Blue on the dado rail, the wall below and all woodwork (skirting, doors and banisters), and then Strong White on the walls above the dado rail and ceiling. I had originally thought Wimbourne White but it comes out as very yellow in the hall. What do people think? Will it be too dark? Will Strong White be too cold? It's a big job and I really don't want to get it wrong!

For reference, I'm going F&B colour match with Johnstones as it's more durable. They'd done good matches before.

Anyone?

Just looked up Berrington blue and I think it would hit the right tone (no pun intended). Deep without being too dark. Do share a photo if you decide to go for it as I have inherited a pale grey hallway that feels gloomy and flat and am thinking of what would liven it up. Recently went for Selvedge in a north facing study and I think that could be a good alternative to Berrington blue if you want a comparator

allboysherebutme · 28/11/2022 22:50

I think Berrington and white will look lovely. X

Wbeezer · 28/11/2022 23:02

I just tested Selvedge in a reception room I'm redecorating, I thought I wanted a dark colour for a change but there is so much woodwork in the room ( panelled window bay, two doors and two recessed cupboards) that it looks to contrasting and busy so I've chickened out and gone for Elephant's breath instead. It'll be easier to hang pictures against too. I hope you can get your colour scheme to work, I always admire strong colours in other people's houses!

Thanks for your replies. Does anyone have experience of Strong White? I'm concerned the grey tone will be a bit cold? But it seems to go best with Berrington Blue.

Berrington Blue looks lovely, but I'm not sure about strong white, I think you want that top half of the room to add some light. I think I would go All White or Wevet. I think it might look a bit depressing with a grey white on the top.

Falcon1 · 29/11/2022 12:43

Thanks LadyDaburysHat. I've tried a sample of All White and it looks a bit stark. I'll try Wevet.

This is F&B’s All White which is a true white. I love it but it sounds like you want a softer white. I’ve also used little Greene’s Loft White and Slaked lime which are nice whites. Slaked lime is definitely a warm white and I’ve used it with blue in my kitchen.

In a dark north facing space I'd avoid cool tones in any colour whether it was dark or light.

I think F&B Hay with Wimborne white would look nice.

averythinline · 29/11/2022 16:01

Im going for little green canton.... in this scenario....i found the
Berrington blue too grey in the limited Northern light although i love it..
So am using in my sth facing bathroom instead !

Have ended up replacing the front door so taking the opportunity to add more glass ..

Usung a warmer tone and adding mirror and sparkling lighting and interesting art is my plan

Falcon1 · 29/11/2022 16:29

Gorgeous hallway TattiePants! It looks very stylish. I do find All White too stark though. I'll have a look at the ones you suggested

You could install new lighting as well as painting. Your light bulb and light shade colours will affect how your paint colour looks.

Falcon1 · 29/11/2022 16:34

Yes, ideally we would install new lighting, but that's likely to cost hundreds and the decorators start on Monday!

We ended up using strong white in the hall as so many others had a stronger grey tone.. drove me insane

Falcon1 · 29/11/2022 17:08

HauntedPencil - how is the Strong White? Does it look good? And if so, how much light does your hallway get?

Canton is a lovely vibrant colour @averythinline

If you look at victorianadventure on Instagram, their hallway is strong white.

Can’t believe I remember strangers’ paint shades 😬.

Falcon1 · 29/11/2022 17:26

That's really helpful @JustAJokeLikeOnTopGear thank you!

I have a dark hallway and used f&b skimming stone. Quite light but i love the way it changes colour over the course of the day.

marmalard · 29/11/2022 17:49

We have Dimity in our hallway and love it! Lovely warm colour. Goes with blue accents or warmer ones.

Ketzele · 29/11/2022 17:55

I have never found Strong White cold. It does have a slight grey undertone, but it's a warm grey. It's my very favourite F+B white.

Possiblynotever · 29/11/2022 18:04

Strong White is good in south facing rooms or in rooms with little light. When I had the same problem, F&B suggested Dimity: it is not yellow but more dim brown and it looks warm white in a north facing ground floor room.
Natural light changes so much the colour- why don't you just buy a long roll of white paper, paint it with the chosen " white" and then move it around during the day and the evening? White is actually a very difficult shade

CambsAlways · 30/11/2022 16:21

Love strong white I’ve got it in my dining room

Wbeezer · 30/11/2022 20:57

I'm using Wevet at the moment, got it mixed in a trade paint shop in Johnstone's trade paint, half the price of F&B! It's looking good so far, not to stark or too grey.

Falcon1 · 01/12/2022 12:08

Yes, I'm leaning towards Wevet now @Wbeezer. We've got it in our kitchen and it's lovely, I just wasn't sure if it would look a bit cold in a dark space (kitchen is really bright)
