Help - What colour should I choose??

So...I'm painting the front room in F&B Pigeon (blue/Grey)
www.farrow-ball.com/en-gb/paint-colours/pigeon
and I've ordered a DFS plush sofa in this blue / teal colour
www.dfs.co.uk/plush
(Not with the different colours cushions - just the blue/teal)
So - I don't know what colour carpet to get?!
I'd like a cream carpet but will it clash?
Anyone have any ideas what would work?
Thanks : )

I'd say cream or oat coloured carpet! Or light oak floor with a large area rug in neutral colours 😊 will keep things light and bright and let the walls / sofa stand out imo.

fruitbrewhaha · 22/11/2022 13:46

Cream carpet is pretty neutral but will get filthy. Maybe a pale grey?

Coffeetableposhbooks · 22/11/2022 13:50

Op did you colour sample on the wall with pigeon. I used it in our living room and it looked steel grey, so used it in our bedroom instead, and it is a lovely green Grey colour, more green than grey, way more. The lighting really impacts it. So using a tester is critical

Rowen32 · 22/11/2022 13:52

What are the undertones of the grey?
If they're not brown I wouldn't get cream as it will clash...
If they're more blue/purpley I'd go grey with the carpet.
Well actually I'd get a wood floor and a rug like a PP said but that's not answering your question!!

Petran · 22/11/2022 13:56

Oh wow - thanks guys, this is really helpful. Can't do a wood floor unfortunately - it has to be a carpet. Would really like cream (now the kids are a bit older) but yeah it will still get wrecked, maybe a bit over ambitious : )
I have done a bit of a sample - coffee you are correct, the light really makes a difference - but I think's it's sufficiently green in here (see image)
I suppose I'm worried I have two bold colours (he teal and the pigeon) and my partner thinks cream might not work - I am not that great with seeing the big picture, so just can't imagine it. I'll go with the consensus today!!!

So it's grey, cream or oatmeal?
Do we think any of those will work?

Can you find a greyish-green (or greenish grey?)

Rowen32 · 22/11/2022 15:51

OP, have you got a fabric sample of the sofa and held it up against the paint in the room? That sample picture you've posted, I'm not sure I'd put them together..

Petran · 22/11/2022 17:40

Rowen32 I know what you mean 🤔
I’ll post the swatch tomorrow when the light is better. I guess if it really doesn’t work I could find a different colour…but which colour??

Petran · 24/11/2022 10:15

Okay - so this is the sofa colour swatch - and I've added the (possible) wall colour .... do these clash? (I'm hopeless!)
I need to know whether to change the wall colour and what to - and what colour carpet to get.
I was going to go - this wall colour, blue sofa and cream carpet - but I'm now thinking this may be a dogs dinner...
Any advice appreciated!

I don’t think it works, you need to change the wall colour.

gluenotsoup · 24/11/2022 13:48

I think the fabric colour makes the wall colour look muddy. I’d change the wall colour.

Rauha · 24/11/2022 13:54

I also think change the wall colour

LizzieSiddal · 24/11/2022 14:02

Sorry but it I too don’t think those two colour go together at all. Think you’ll need to change the wall colour. Matchstick by F&B is great. www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/matchstick

I think oatmeal colour for the carpet will go with the sofa, rather than cream.

LizzieSiddal · 24/11/2022 14:02

*Do not go together

Coffeetableposhbooks · 24/11/2022 14:03

Can I ask are you really set on the sofa colour? on the website it looks navy but in the swatch image it looks a very bright royal blue , which will be limiting

TrainSet · 24/11/2022 14:14

What sort of room is it? Modern / Victorian / cottage etc? And what's the rest of your furniture like? Traditional, mid-century, rustic etc?

I agree with the comments in the wall colour with the sofa. I imagine you're committed to the sofa colour now.

PorkPieForStarters · 24/11/2022 14:18

I have pale grey carpets and I think they already look a little dated.

My next carpets will be low pile or berber in a natural/pale-ish oatmeal colour, I just don't think it dates plus the slightly mottled colour helps it work with different colour wall/furnishing colours (and hides bits of dirt!).

I'd pick something that will go with lots of decorating styles, as you can easily change the wall colour whenever you fancy, but the carpets aren't so easy.

Petran · 24/11/2022 17:21

Oh dear - I'm thinking you're all correct - the wall colour is going to have to change : (
I made the mistake of just picking the colour I liked best - then the sofa I liked best...
Hmmmm, so -

  1. No can't change the sofa as it's on order already, (it's quite teal, blue mix in the right light)
2.Can change the wall colour. 3.Can still decide on carpet - but oatmeal seems to be the winner at the moment, unless I could still get cream, if I get a suitable wall colour.

So!
Room is quite big, 1930's style really - bay window, mid-low ceilings, fireplace, basic coving - nothing grand. Other furniture is darkish wood/mango/gold picture frames and mirror (not shiny, more rustic gold)
I wanted to achieve a warm cosy feel, hence the dark paint for the wall - so would still like (if possible) to go dark on the walls - do love F&B colours - any thoughts? Grey - would downpipe be too dark?

Thoughts really appreciated!

We have pigeon in our house. That sofa will not go with it.

TrainSet · 24/11/2022 20:32

On the basis of your update OP, with your muted gold mirror / accents and the blue sofa with teal cushions, how about a muted pink wall colour? You could go darker or more subtle depending on your preference. I think dark blue, teal and muted pink are a lovely combination, and work well with gold and darker woods. You could also add plum accents / cushions.

F&B seem to do a nice one called Sulking Room pink which looks quite nice just from a quick browse. Or you could veer slightly more towards paprika on the spectrum if feeling braver. (I'd avoid the more pastely millennium pink which can look a bit 2018!)

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 24/11/2022 20:41

if you love farrown and ball i think dead salmon or pink ground or setting plaster could look good with the sofa and gold accents, pink shades are definitely art deco 1930's vibe rather than grey shades

Coffeetableposhbooks · 24/11/2022 20:49

I was also thinking a pale pink like dead salmon or setting plaster. There are not that many colours you can use with the sofa . It does look like bright royal blue in the swatch in the light of the room it was taken. And that’s hard to tone to effectively

youcancallmeEl · 24/11/2022 20:58

I also don't think Pigeon works. Dusky pink such as Setting Plaster as PP suggested might look good. Also maybe a lighter green that's less grey, such as Mizzle or Cromarty? Something like this:

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 24/11/2022 21:09

hi OP, I had a colour consultancy from F&B - would that be an option? They devise on about 3 rooms in an hour. I loved it as I just couldn’t visualise. You also get a discount on the paint and primers.

I also wanted to ask about the sofa as it’s one my list of possibles and I’m going to test it this weekend- is it really comfortable?
