I need a light fitting solution - any ideas?

Hi everyone. I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me with this as I'm a bit stumped.

I live in a rental so can't make any radical changes. One problem is that there are three really ugly light fittings in the lounge and dining room (all the same - see photo).

Do you think I can hide it somehow in a large lampshade? I'd have to find one that I could open out and then close it around the fitting.

I'm sure someone better than me at all this can come up with a solution!

I don’t think that’s ugly at all but I guess you could try to fit a large circular shade over it as long as It doesn’t touch the bulbs

I'd either just live with them or find three ordinary looking light fittings and ask LL if you can change them if you but them and pay an electrician to fit them.

I agree

I was expecting much worse than that. I'd just use lamps and try not to use them. Or get your own and ask landlord if you can replace them while you live there.

Thanks all. I guess they're not that ugly, they're just not my style at all. I prefer scandi/boho type decor.

I'm not sure how I'd put a lamp shade on but I'll have a think.

Do you think if you got 3 lampshades (for bedside lamps, not ceiling ones) in a style you liked, it would hide the black dish and some of the black? Or would it just look overwhelmed and clashy?

If you've got a bedside lamp, maybe try the shade on one bulb, and see what it does?

Change it to one you like, put the other one back when you leave. Simple.

You could put three large globe bulbs on them rather than candle bulbs to give them a more modern feel. I was expecting a 1970s tacky gold fitting!

They’re not awful but if your decor is white and natural I can see they would stand out a lot.

I think if you get some clip on candle shades - the type that clip on to the light bulb - this will soften it a lot. There will be a bit less black visible and a softer light.

You could also try wrapping the frame in ribbon or something but not sure if that would look messy, plus if you have 3 to do it will take ages!

Thanks everyone. Yes, there are quite a few to do - too expensive to replace them all (there are also two upstairs) and put them back afterwards.

I didn't know about clip on shades - I'll have a look. I did actually think about winding some fake ivy around the black bits, but it will probably look silly. I will experiment though!

I would go for drum shade in wicker and put in globe bulbs. It's so light you could just hang it with strong thread from the very top of the fitting. You might have try fitting it upside down though it cut out the part that usually takes the bulb.

If you like boho, why not tie some colourful dangly bits and pieces onto them? Such as bits of mirror on a string and coloured glass pieces?
