HOW MUCH for oak doors?!! Is this extortionate or what?

I've just had a quote for new internal doors

14 of them to include a set of French type doors which are half glass of you see what I mean.

And by 'oak' I mean solid core oak veneer type doors - not solid oak of course. I've attached an example

Anyway. The quote. For all material and labour, we've been quoted £4750.

This seems on the pricey side to me but am I ridiculously out of touch?

Happy to be told I am!

Sounds right to me. We paid a comparable amount for 10 doors to be installed about 7 years ago (I mean, comparable in the sense that I mentally added four more doors to our cost and allowed for the huge increase in both labour and materials in the past 7 years!).

CatGrins · 09/11/2022 20:44

We paid between 220 and 250 per door including fixtures and labour for 6 doors last year. Some were all wood, some were half glazed.

OtterOnToast · 09/11/2022 20:57

Blimey.

Maybe it is about right

Doors would be Dordogne from howdens

We're getting similar from howdens and that sounds about if it includes labour. Ours is a bit less, but we're just purchasing the doors from them.

confusedlots · 09/11/2022 21:00

*sounds about right

catfunk · 09/11/2022 21:04

No, that's only about £100 per door Inc. fitting. Not much at all

OtterOnToast · 09/11/2022 21:06

@catfunk I make it about £337 per door? 100'quid would be fine

We got ours from www.shop24glasgow.co.uk/
they came from Poland and are solid wood! And beautifully made.
our friend said it was cheaper to go to Poland and ship doors over than buy them in b and q. They also come ready with handles etc, so not an extra whatever for hinges.

mermeration · 09/11/2022 21:09

I have dordogne doors from howdens. I paid about £700 for 7 with the handles (they come up and very so often on the rooster sales) and about £40/45 to fit.

So yeah i think that's expensive but depends on area for labour I suppose

Heyhoniddy · 09/11/2022 21:10

Oh and they were made to order. Still cheaper than the composite crap we were so disheartened to be looking at. Especially when some showroom guy got out a calculator and hummed and hawed before announcing an insane price half an hour later. it s a DOOR ffs. How can you not know the price?

our neighbour got these www.flyingdoors.co.uk/shop/composite-front-doors and they look good

greeandorange · 09/11/2022 21:10

Go online order them yourself and pay a trade person to fit them when they are delivered.

Save your self about 25% margin that is being added. Don't forget handles can really add up as well

Wallywobbles · 09/11/2022 21:24

Ours came from ukoakdoors but required all fixtures, fittings, hinges cut in, frames made up etc. Great doors though.

Badger1970 · 09/11/2022 21:27

We got ours from Howdens on a friends trade account and paid a carpenter to fit them. Mind you, I did get a bit carried away with the handles and hinges so ours ended up way more than budgetted........

RidingMyBike · 10/11/2022 11:46

We're getting the Dordogne Howdens ones and they're not coming up as expensive as that? Is your builder passing on all of his discount or not? Ours is a big builder so think Howdens gets a lot of business from him!

DoctorAcula · 10/11/2022 12:09

I had very similar fitted last month, although we went for the Howdens Holdenby pre-finished so that we didn't need to varnish them. We had new casings too, they came in at £323 per door in the end including handles, hinges and labour, this isn't too bad considering the door itself is £205 at Howdens.

Wheretheskyisblue · 17/11/2022 08:38

We paid about £120 per door, £50 per door for ironmongery and £50 per door for fitting, so £220 per door x 14 = £3380 about 10 years ago. Would expect 30% + more now so your quote seems ok. You are probably paying a bit of a premium for the supply, might be able to save £500 or so by soucing doors/ironmongery yourself.
