What age is too old for a mid-sleeper bed?

We are looking at switching around beds in bedrooms. We have a double bed, single bed & mid-sleeper.

Thinking of giving tall 12yo the double, then younger DS could either have the single or mid-sleeper. But I'm thinking that the youngest will grow out of the mid sleeper soon.

What age do you think kids grown out of mid-sleepers?

Assuming it's a full sized single bed, then it could easily last until early teens or beyond. Mine still has one at 11 (nearly 12) and no plans to change it yet.

Do they grow out of them? Presuming you mean a full size single with storage underneath and not one with a play tent then I don’t necessarily think there is an age limit.

I wouldn't buy one for an over 10, as its one you already have probably up to 13 or whenever he starts getting tall- the ladders are impractical for adult or nearly adult sized boys

Thanks! It's a full single bed with a play space underneath (approx 1 metre clearance).

Trying to figure out what to do as we can't store whichever bed we're not using - so we either get rid of the single, then have to replace it when he grows out of the mid sleeper (4/5 years ago probably), or get rid of the mid sleeper (which he really likes).

My son is 8 and has a mid sleeper.

Never, ever again.

Baby DD will be getting a normal bed when the time comes.

The amount of times I've had to clean vomit off the walls and the side of that thing because he hasn't been able to get down the ladder in time. Honestly. Traumatic.

How high is your ceiling? It’s not the clearance under the bed that matters so much as the head height for the child or teenager in the bed. Mine are tall and needed more headroom from about 12.

PauliString · 09/11/2022 11:18

My children are tall, that is, and my ceilings are not.

TwinklingStarlight · 13/11/2022 10:55

My children are not tall and I wouldn't buy one for an over 10 either. I don't find them all that great for storage. The drawers only go to halfway back in the space so there is a lot of wasted space, and around 11 DS's clothes outgrew the drawers. Next time I would get a single bed, really solid underbed drawers on castors, and some shelves over.

Hm.

S1 had a high sleeper till he went to university (for Reasons he was away almost all the time). He was quite happy contorting himself into the small amount of space left at the top - refused my suggestion of replacing it earlier.

S2 had been less delighted with his - the attraction wore off aged about 13 I think.

Would you be able to chop the legs off when he stops enjoying the play space?

TeenDivided · 13/11/2022 12:05

My petite DD didn't move out of her mid sleeper until she was 16.

This!!

God the splash of the vomit on to the wooden floor is the stuff of nightmares.

Last time it cost me over £300 as I had to replace the mattress, duvet, pillows and paint the bloody walls again.

I cannot wait to get rid of it. Don't do it OP!

We replaced ds's when he went to secondary school.

We redecorated to give him a more grown up bedroom. I think they are for primary aged kids really unless space is a big issue.
