Auction houses like Chiswick, Lots Roads etc?

Hi all,

I'm moving to London next year and rather than go down the IKEA route to fill our flat, am hoping to find lots of pieces at auction.

(I know you can find, for example, beautiful antique drawers for around the same price as brand new IKEA drawers!)

Does anyone know of any reasonable London auction houses, like Chiswick and Lots Road? (especially ones that do home contents auctions?)

Chiswick are good for art, but not sure about furniture. Roseberrys in SE London have good furniture sales fairly regularly.

Southgate Auction in N14 is well placed for anyone in north London and near to Southgate tube station.

The viewing is Saturdays and Monday mornings I think, and the auction itself is on Monday afternoon (but you don't have to bid in person, you can leave one with the office and someone will bid for you up to your maximum amount). They will also deliver for a fee.

It's a real mix of nice and nasty, but whenever I've been, there are always some interesting bits.

And BTW you're absolutely right about not wasting your money on IKEA furniture that will look crap after five years.

Thank you very much, that's very helpful!

A long time since I have been there but Criterion Auctions in Battersea SW11 used to have furniture

Criterion Auctioneers Islington. I bought a Victorian table there for £60 (a long time ago!) it was fab.

I’d also recommend your local facebook selling pages, Nextdoor , gumtree etc as people are always offloading furniture often quite nice stuff for not too much.

Someone recommended www.the-saleroom.com on here tonight. It's basically an auction house aggregator.

I spent an hour or so online finding the local sale rooms and now have bids on some lovely things. Auction prices are astonishingly low, even after factoring additional fees and it's not that much less convenient than ebay etc.
