Big rug or little rug? With photo!

I want something to warm up the kitchen (not literally), and also to mask the bad kitchen planning that has created a too big space between the back and the peninsular, so I’m getting a washable rug. But which size? I like the floor so feels a shame to cover so much up but will the smaller size look a bit like it’s floating?

Bigger always. We have a rug that is too small for the space and it looks silly and we trip over it all the time.

May I ask which company you are gettingbthe washable rug from?

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 22/10/2022 15:13

Might it not be a bit of a trip hazard in the kitchen?

TolkiensFallow · 22/10/2022 15:14

Big

Beggingforsleep · 22/10/2022 15:15

Thanks. You’re right. I did think the smaller one could be a trip hazard.

I’m looking at iRugs. I haven’t used them before but they look much cheaper than ruggable and have lots of square shapes to choose from.

@OnTheBrinkOfChange hopefully not in the big size. I wouldn’t have to move hot pans across it, I could get to the sink without leaving it. Maybe I can also get something that’ll grip on the underside.

Spills/splashes from the cooker (unless you dont use it and it is for show)
You would be washing it daily- do you have a large capacity washer and dryer?

Beggingforsleep · 22/10/2022 15:58

@ItsFlippingBoiling I’ve got two kids under 5 and a dog, I have a high tolerance for grub 🤣. I don’t see why it’ll need washing more often than I mop the floor.

Please don’t do this.. paint something nice on the floor if you think it needs it.

That was my thought
You could get a rug professionally painted and sealed. Or is it Lino? In which case it could be cut out and infilled.

You have a dark floor that hides dirt- a rug will show stains much more easily.

PayPennies · 22/10/2022 16:14

I’m sorry but a rug in a kitchen is a remarkably bad idea.

A rug in any other room is absolutely fine. Not a kitchen. It would absorb so much - not just spills, but odours, moisture and such.

and mopping a floor and cleaning a rug are not the same things. Imagine the cleaning and drying - either at home or professionally - this kitchen rug would need.

and a trip hazard in the worst possible room

inappropriateraspberry · 22/10/2022 16:16

I reccomend the grey rug grip felt from ikea! We have some under rugs on LVT, and it holds them well.

inappropriateraspberry · 22/10/2022 16:17

We also have a rug in our kitchen, doesn't get filthy, and it's near the sink and hob.

Mercurial123 · 22/10/2022 16:22

I wouldn't put a rug in the kitchen.

TattiePants · 22/10/2022 16:30

I’d go for the bigger size and buy a non-slip rug underlay.

SparklyAntlers · 22/10/2022 16:36

I wouldn't go with a rug at all - for all the reasons mentioned already and also your floor is lovely. What about getting one of those large trolleys / standalone kitchen islands and place it perpendicular to the shelf with the books (bottom right 1st pic) and parallel to the fridge, creating a peninsula? You could paint it in the same colour as your cabinets and top it with a wooden counter with similar tones to your floor. That might help close up the space a bit and gives you extra workspace.

ChateauMargaux · 22/10/2022 16:38

The floor is beautiful - The kitchen, in my opinion, is not a room that needs a rug, unless the kids will be playing on the floor and it is particularly cold.

owo · 22/10/2022 16:40

Another vote for no rug. It looks fine as it is.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 22/10/2022 16:43

We have two rugs in our kitchen. One in the sofa area, then a runner between hob / pantry etc and i island. They work brilliantly to warm up the space.

op I’d get the bigger size

Badoukas · 22/10/2022 17:07

No rug at all.

batshitballs · 22/10/2022 17:19

No rug

Beggingforsleep · 22/10/2022 17:32

No rug vs rug wasn’t the advice I was looking for 🤣. I’m a 40 year old woman who can make decisions all for myself and weigh up the benefits/risks of having a rug in the kitchen.

Thanks to all who advised on size. Big it is.

Definitely the larger size (although your floor is lovely)....

We have two rugs in our kitchen - one between the sofa and wood burner, the other between the range cooker and island....so pleased with our decision 😀
