Probably a stupid question.....

We have a peeling paint problem in our bathroom. I think the previous owners just used normal emulsion. There's no sign of damp. We've scraped some off as it's peeled so have both painted and some sections that's back to the plaster.

Now here's my possibly stupid question. We will redo the bathroom next year but just want to spruce it up for Christmas so was just going to slap a bit more white emulsion over it. It doesn't matter if it lasts. Will do it properly next year with bathroom paint etc.

But it's just occurred to me that this might cause problems in the future? Ie will adding more emulsion just mean the bathroom paint has a poor surface under it and it'll bubble or peel? Will we have to remove all the problem emulsion before repainting with bathroom paint? Or will it be fine?

No idea! Not a stupid question, I was hoping it was so I could share my wisdom but sadly I have none! Hopefully someone will be able to help soon

It sounds like they haven't done the diluted paint prep for new plaster so it isn't adhering properly. It needs to be done at some point otherwise you will continually have problems

Ah OK. So do we have to scrape and sand off all the emulsion that's left on 😩 😩😩😩 And then do the diluted paint coat.

I would. You said its down to plaster in places now anyway. Ill be honest, I spent years trying to fix painted bathroom walls/ceiling. Bathroom paint, silk paint, artex on ceiling, that anti damp paint. After twenty years of "fixing" I had it reskimmed and did it properly. Not a single issue since and its nearly eight years. All that time and energy wasted and I still ended up having to do it 😂

Oh pants, that's annoying, will probably just have to stay how it is until next year then :-(
