Can we talk 'Shutters?'

I love the look of shutters and know they are pricey. If you have them are they worth it, can you give me a ball park price? I'm reluctant to get measures and then pestered if totally unatainable.

If you want to avoid pestering then avoid Hilarys and Thomas Sanderson and other national chains, go for a local company and be clear you don’t want follow ups.

Ours were done quite a while ago but I seem to remember about £1k per window, in London

Great advice, thank you .

We got ours about 10 years ago. I don’t remember where we got them from but we love them. They look smart and are hugely practical.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 29/09/2022 12:30

Love ours, I think they cost about £2.5K, fitted about 18 months ago. Two large windows (bedroom and lounge), and one small study window. Didn't bother with side of house or back.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 29/09/2022 12:31

Oh one thing I'm so glad we did .... blackout blind fitted behind the bedroom shutters. It rolls up out of sight when not needed, but makes the room completely dark in the summer, and cool.

FluSue · 29/09/2022 15:05

We got ours fitted by a small local company after hearing nightmare stories about being harassed by Hillarys and the like. This was about 7 years ago and they were £300 a window, considerably less than what I'd been advised the big chains would charge. I think I found the company that fitted them on a local Facebook group.

I second the advise to put a blackout blind behind them. Shutters are great for keeping the heat in during the winter and the rooms cool during the summer, but for bedrooms they wouldn't be dark enough by themselves unless you went for solid shutters.

Blinds2Go and curtains2Go (same parent company) have started doing shutters. I have loads of blinds (fabric & wooden) and curtains from them over the years. Not tried their shutters yet. But everything I have ever tried from them have been fab and really well priced v competitors and consistently fantastic customer service. Might be worth a look.

Exactly the same for ours! Two x big bay windows and one small bedroom was around 2.5k at a similar time.

We used a non famous company too, there's lots of them about

IwishIwasSupermum · 07/10/2022 17:49

We had shutters fitted 14 years ago, still look great, they were pricey at the time but have become cost effective now, curtains wouldn’t have lasted 14 years before replacement,if they hadn’t worn out I would have got fed up with them. I love the fact I can decorate a room without having to think about the windows.

Kualma · 07/10/2022 17:49

I had a quote from Hillarys and John Lewis. I found Hillarys ridiculously expensive! John Lewis at the same was slightly more expensive than Blinds2Go however I preferred someone coming to measure it for me and fit it than having to do it myself!

I haven't received my shutters yet but the samples looked gorgeous. If you're going to white, go for vivid white as opposed to pure white. Pure white looks like a yellow colour versus vivid white.

HanleyGirl123 · 10/10/2022 05:28

We are looking at having shutters fitted in our new home. How do you get blinds fitted behind the shutters? It's a Victorian semi so large tall windows.
We had shutters in the bay window of our old home (£600 3 window bay, local supplier) and I can't think where you would fit the blind. Did the shutter company supply and fit too?

Spanglybangles · 11/10/2022 17:49

Blinds2go have 40% off their shutters right now.

MumzyD · 13/10/2022 15:05

A shutter company can fit the blackout blinds behind the shutters. We have an integrated blackout blind with the shutter. Call ShutterLab for advise, they are highly recommended 👌

Integrated blinds sound perfect, thank you!
I'll look up Shutterlab

I’d love to see photos of the bay window shutters, I can’t visualise how they’d look

This is our living room bay. The bedroom is the same but not dark enough for me. In the new place I'm definitely going for integrated blinds.

Yabado · 13/10/2022 16:41

I have them
for 48 by 48 standard windows I think I paid about £500
Thats was in 2020 with a local firm
I paid around 2.5k for one large back kitchen window
2 @ 48 x 48 inches
and 1 smaller landing window
plus 4 roller blinds behind the shutters and vertical blinds for my patio door

Yabado · 13/10/2022 16:42

I mean in total 2.5k not 2.5 for one shutter

smileandsing · 13/10/2022 16:43

We had shutters fitted in our kitchen; double patio door with four full length panels and two windows with two panels each - £1400 inc. fitting from a local company. They look really smart and shut out the light while keeping the heat in when closed.
Be careful if considering the DIY measure and fit yourself approach, even what look like straightforward window settings may not be exactly the same size on each side, making it hard to properly fit the shutters, and it will take ages to do.

Mercurial123 · 13/10/2022 16:49

I'm waiting for a quote for solid panel Shaker shutters in the bedroom in solid wood and cafe shutters in the bay window in living room. Going for wood which will obviously be more expensive. I'm in the South East. Will update with a price when I get the quote. My flat is also Victorian with large windows.

Startuplife · 13/10/2022 16:54

We’ve just had a quote from a small local firm in the South East. For 2 big windows and then 2 small ones which go up the stairs we were quoted £1,195

I was actually very pleasantly surprised at the price and might ask him to do a couple more as well.

Mercurial123 · 13/10/2022 17:06

For those who had shutters fitted what did you choose vinyl, wood or composite?
