Vinyl flooring for bedroom on a budget

Hi, we want to rip out the bedroom carpets in the house we're buying and replace with Vinyl flooring. We will have rugs as well. What's the most low cost way of doing this while still having something that will last. Not after high spec just practical. Any recommendations of suppliers? When I read that you have to lay planks as a base down first is that a case of buy them from Homebase etc? DIY novice! Maybe we will rip out the carpets and lay the planks of wood but get a pro to lay the vinyl. Or is there a cheapy way of getting all done buy a budget provider? Thanks

Surely there will be a wooden floor underneath already? Unless you have a concrete floor?

I cannot imagine vinyl flooring to be very nice in bedrooms. It will be cold and austere. Why do you want to do this?

I have wooden floors. I imagine vinyl would be warmer and softer.

Thanks, I have read you need to put down wood underneath so planning that until I see the state of the floor. Each to their own but I can't stand carpets and not great for our allergies. All my family abroad don't have carpet anywhere. We will have washable rugs for warmth and vinyl is supposed to be warmer and quieter than laminate (which we;ve had in previous rentals and wasn't all that bad)

It depends how big an area you've got but we managed to buy Amtico at a fraction of the cost on eBay. Often commercial jobs have spare left over and they sell it off rather than throwing it away.

We have underfloor heating so it's lovely and warm.

Thanks, did you fit it yourself?

I put this down in the bedroom, it's a grey white. Looks great. I left down the carpet underlay and put this on top. Was £40 to fit.

I think you can use hardboard/mdf under vinyl. Gives a smoother finish.

Just googled. Apparently plywood is best under vinyl flooring.

No, we used an independent fitter so we weren't tied to buying from a flooring shop. Ours has thin ply underneath. It didn't look that easy to fit so I'd leave it to a professional.

Our upstairs floors are some sort of hardboard I think (not wooden planks). We've got vinyl in the bedroom which used to be the nursery. We did have it laid by a fitter. 25 years on it looks fine, not really cold underfoot despite being over the garage... not sure if it has some sort of underlay or not.
