Where do you buy beds and basic furniture ?

Hi All

I have a bit of a daunting task of relocating. I have been living in Asia for 12 years and now will be heading back to the UK.

I can see that rental flats mostly come unfurnished…So that means budgeting for a whole lot of extra stuff…

Where do you buy beds, basic furniture?
Where are the best deals - is it Argos , IKEA or what else …?
Any budget saving tips are appreciated ))

It will very much depend on your budget. Assuming that is tight, Ikea and Argos are indeed options as are B&Q for shelves, mirrors etc.
Don’t overlook the free giveaways on NextDoor and your local Facebook pages. We were giving away bunks etc. and there were not many takers!
The charities like the British Heart Foundation and other local ones have 2nd hand furniture shops where you could get kitted out nice and cheaply.

And welcome back!!

Facebook marketplace.
IKEA is always worth a shout if you have transport and one close.

Have a look at Wayfair.

I have got some new beds from wayfair recently good prices and quality.

Depends on budget, best furniture I've got was made, small businesses with joiners/carpenter type people who make from scratch, you'd get better deals if buying multiple items.
We have sone ikea stuff too which is cheap and ok
Argos stuff is more student type IMO but I've not shopped there in years so difficult to say these days.

Ikea. You can get stuff online now if you can’t or don’t want to drive to a store.

Wayfair do nice rugs but I’ve attempted to order furniture from their a couple of times and it’s been damaged or naff quality so it’s gone straight back.

Good luck with the move!

Charity shops often have decent solid old furniture for reasonable prices. Some will deliver for a fee too.

If you are coming to London I find lots of IKEA ( and other ) lightly used stuff for sale on Gumtree, they also have a section for Freebies and Trash Nothing all is free.

The population is fairly transient and lots have disposable incomes and move frequently so there is a fair amount of second hand furniture being turned around.

Actually we are going to Manchester , the population is smaller of course but might be still worth trying . Thank you for the advice !

Wilko sometimes has good bits and pieces too. Good luck with your move!

Amazon. I shop around between Wayfair, Dunelm, The Range, Argos, Next etc. for basics. There is usually something in the same style on amazon a bit cheaper.

For ornaments etc. Primark and H&M now do a home range.

Bedding- Aldi do very cheap Egyptian cotton.

For furniture I try to buy solid wood furniture from second hand shops , Facebook marketplace or ebay, much better quality than IKEA and easy to sand and varnish or paint.

Summersdreaming · 05/09/2022 07:26

Just seen your Manchester comment, the Trafford Centre has a big Primark & H&M home.

B&M is worth a look too.

kimchifox · 05/09/2022 07:30

Facebook marketplace / local buy and sell groups are worth checking, also yes to IKEA as you know what you are getting and John Lewis has a new Any Day range. I'd just get the very bare minimum to start off with and add to it when you have time to shop around.

GOODCAT · 09/09/2022 09:42

If you have the means to transport it, local furniture auctions are great and can be very, very cheap. Ebay is worth a look, again if you get a local seller some will deliver.

Otherwise Dreams is good for beds, argos is also inexpensive.
