If not grey then what??

We're replacing carpets in all bedrooms and stairs across 2 floors. I'd like all the bedrooms to have the same carpet and potentially on the stairs/landings (but does that need to be something more hard wearing??)

If grey is out what's the modern neutral to use instead? All spaces are getting a lick of paint too so it's a blank slate at the mo.

Brown?

Sorry op. I am not good at neutral. I found the grey trend really difficult when looking on Rightmove for a house last year. Was rarely sure whether the house photos had been shot in monochrome or it was decor.

Could you maybe do wooden floors and have rugs in colours that suit their occupants preferred taste/colours?

BlueKaftan · 27/08/2022 20:34

Taupe herringbone?

Rowen32 · 27/08/2022 22:26

Taupe probably..

Neutrals are either grey toned or beige I think and you're not going to want beige carpets I presume so the next best thing is to add a bit of brown bringing you to the taupe colors

Grey would definitely be easier in terms of matching paints etc, it goes with so much.. Taupe you're going to be stuck a little depending on what you're looking for

I'd be going with laminate floors, you'll have more scope and can put lovely rugs around the beds to soften the rooms up..
A runner on stairs then would do the same on top of the floorboards :-)

Foundinthedark · 27/08/2022 22:33

I did flooring everywhere is much better and I put some rugs tkmaxx has nice choice. If you can't afford wooden flooring laminate is good and much cheaper.
By having flooring for me is also having much cleaner floor. Now I realised how much dust was inside the carpets and how quicker I can also clean.

Cream goes with everything.

Focalpoint · 28/08/2022 09:37

I've just had this same dilemma and picked the colour that is between grey and brown.

I'd have loved to go cream or lighter but not practical. The other alternative that I was tempted by was between grayish green.

So the middle one in the photo.

CorpusCallosum · 28/08/2022 11:34

I was tempted by wood floors & rugs but my mum has this set up and it is noisy with a 3yo running around. There's a baby too and they're only going to get noisier as they crash about.

I'm just not as keen on the beige/cream neutrals as the grey ones. I guess the carpet could be grey but the rest of the decor absolutely doesn't have to be 🤔

Views on grey vs taupe? 🤔

I think the grey lends itself to the 'black framed monochrome picture' look whereas the taupe is more suited to scandi 'lots of wood' look. I guess both are fine if you stay consistent to the undertones 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have similar to that grey as a runner on our stairs and carpet on the landing, I have colours on walls though, we mainly have exposed and oiled floorboards, rugs in each room. In its and the spare room the rug b is greatly as big as the room, just a border around the edge of a foot or so. I like pattern and colour though

RewildingAmbridge · 28/08/2022 12:20

Caveat we do have pale grey walls in the hallway, but I have photos and a couple of paintings in frames of different sizes, shapes, colours, textures and a bright yellow hall table and a patterned runner in the downstairs hallway

BlueKaftan · 28/08/2022 12:23

The grey is cooler. The lighter one is warmer. Maybe that should be your guide.

Hoolihan · 28/08/2022 12:30

I would prefer exposed boards but we couldn't afford to get them done so we have a biscuity colour coir carpet on stairs, landing and bedrooms. Really pleased with it as it's very neutral and hardwearing and doesn't show the dirt/wear as much as a traditional carpet.

Taupe lovely,
grey…’dead’ and cold.

Chewbecca · 28/08/2022 12:47

I really like the carpet in your pics but much prefer the warmth of the taupe. Not with the black skirting though. More ‘hygge’, less harsh.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/08/2022 16:18

My carpet is probably taupe although I've never described it that way. It a sort of light mushroom tone. Warmer than grey and goes with everything. I'm really happy with it.

TattiePants · 28/08/2022 19:00

As a pp said, grey tends to be a cooler colour where as beige / taupe is warmer so it depends on your planned colour schemes. I have this oatmeal carpet in all bedrooms. It’s been down in two rooms for 15 years and it’s still in great condition (apart from the navy paint disaster I’ve had!) and has matched with all colour schemes we’ve had. I have a different (more hard wearing) carpet as a stair runner and on the landing which is a similar herringbone pattern to your pictures.

If you like grey, go with grey. Who cares if it's in "fashion" or not?! A light grey is neutral and goes with everything. And doesn't need to be cold at all.
