Wooden flooring in a first floor flat

Hi all, interested in some opinions please - I live in a first floor flat which is currently carpeted. I’d really like wooden or high quality laminate flooring but am not sure if it’s fair on the tenant underneath me?

Just to describe the level of noise I think I make - I live alone, always take my shoes off at the front door, rarely have people round etc so it’s not like there’s people or myself constantly coming and going and walking around with shoes on. Would I be really out of order to do this? Do you think it would be super noisy for the person underneath me? Thank you!

Yes, it would be super noisy, especially if it is a conversion as soundproofing is usually shit.

Yes it would be super noisy.

do you rent or own? There may be something in your lease/deeds about not having carpeting down.

You can get noise reducing underlay for wooden floors. Prob gives good insulation as well. I've lived in tenements when sanded floorboards were all the rage. A single person upstairs with no shoes wouldn't have made a huge noise.

You may not be allowed. When i owned a flat it was in the leasehold i think or something like that, thatbonly carpets were allowed because of noise

Please don't, it's so loud. We were in an upstairs flat and we really noticed the noise difference when downstairs had wooden floors fitted.

Hotmess1 · 18/08/2022 20:19

Thanks so much for all the replies - I do own the flat, I don’t have anybody above me (it’s a maisonette) so have no idea of how much noise you can hear from somebody above you. It’s not a conversion or tenements though, it was built in the 70s. I guess the consensus is it would be noisy so maybe it’s a no go!

This is interesting as the person in the flat below me does have laminate flooring throughout their whole flat but I never hear them walking around or anything like that!

Please don’t do it. It’ll be horrendous for the people below.

Bluebells12 · 18/08/2022 20:59

It would be extremely noisy for downstairs. It would be a remarkably selfish thing to do and probably result in them eg turning up their music in revenge.

Mosaic123 · 19/08/2022 00:08

You could discuss it with them. Do you have hard floors in the bathroom and kitchen? You can ask them if they can hear you?

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/08/2022 00:25

It’s fine but you need underlay

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/08/2022 00:38

Yes, it would be super noisy.

i hope you can see I’m not a selfish person as if I was I wouldn’t be asking for opinions, I’d just be going ahead and getting it done! My neighbour wouldn’t react like that, she’s a woman in her 50s (similar to myself) and never has music on full stop but I do appreciate that some people might do that!

I do have hard flooring in both the bathroom and kitchen and never once has my neighbour said anything about noise. I guess I think in a small flat (which it is) there’s only so much walking about (which causes the noise) someone can do! 😂

Please don't. My upstairs neighbours where I used to live did and it was intolerable. I could even hear him peeing. They never wore shoes either.
