New skirtings when getting walls plastered?

Recently moved into our new home which is 70s built. All the walls are wallpapered and the first room we’ve stripped the plaster underneath is falling off the walls in many places, need walls and artex ceilings plastered over. So we got a quote which, as everything is these days, was a lot more than we expected. We will get it done but one of the things the plasterer raised was will we be getting new skirting boards. I hadn’t thought of this, is it normal to replace your skirting when you’re replastering?

when you remove the skirting boards they may break so maybe thats why the builder has asked about new ones

My partner is a plasterer. I think he has said that most people would get new skirts because if the wall is being boarded or
plastered it’s going to end up a different shape to previous and the skirts might not fit as well, you might need to do a lot of filling out

also the skirts might be old fashioned and you may want a more modern style to fit the new look of the house. Another thing to consider :)

Interesting, I think the plasterer said if we don’t want to change them he would just plaster up to them, but the issue then would be if we wanted to change them in the future it would damage the plaster. There’s always extra expenses you didn’t account for isn’t there!

Yes. I have 8 btl and whenever we have walls skimmed over we always get new skirtings to give it a neat finish.

You will need filler/decorators caulk to go in gap at top of skirting to get flawless finish before painting. For older houses this is really important.

I'd reuse what you have. Wsste of money and resources replacing stuff that's fit for purpose
