New front door - what furniture?

We are having a new front door, but not going for an expensive option so we'll have to choose and source the door furniture. We don't need a letterbox, but will need a lock of course. So the question is what else to get?

We currently have a door knocker and a doorknob. No plan to have a doorbell so assume we need a doorknocker. Anyone have any thoughts on what works practically and aesthetically? Budget is mid range.

We will be painting the door in a nice Farrow and Ball colour - either a soft red or a blue.

Definitely a door knob - I prefer chrome but all according to taste . One point , with that style of door , where I would think of as the natural place for the knocker is glazed and if you put it immediate below the glaring but centrally you have a panel recess . Would you have have to mount the knocked against bit on a bit of would to bring is out flush with the the knocker is hinged at the top

( I have probably explained that extremely badly). 😊

That style of door would traditionally have a horizontal letter box in the cross rail below the glazing. The letter boxes had an integrated door knocker which could also be used to pull the door shut. There's not much additional space to put a door knocker.
An alternative would be a door knob and a door bell instead.
Nice door though. Should look lovely

That's a very good point @BasiliskStare - maybe I could get a doorknob with a knocker combined? I feel like it would be very annoying not to have one (although our current one is too high and very few delivery drivers use it)

@notanicepersonapparently - I'd just worked that out looking at pictures online! So as I don't need a letterbox maybe I'll just look for a horizontal style knocker which I can use for the same purpose.

Whatever you do, don't put a handle on the outside

Leftbutcameback · 26/07/2022 22:33

@Davros do you mean a doorknob by a handle? And for style reasons or security? Bit confused!

No, I mean a pushy-down handle. I think they look awful on front doors. Your knob-cum-knocker will be fine. I'd love to see the finished article and hear what colour you choose

How the hell are you meant to get through the door from the outside ? 🤔

You open with your key and push.

SwedishEdith · 26/07/2022 22:49

What glazing are you going for, @Leftbutcameback?

Leftbutcameback · 26/07/2022 23:00

@SwedishEdith - plain etched double glazed I think. Hall is dark so we do need some light. We currently have beautiful coloured glazing on our front door but it is very draughty.

Thanks @Davros - nothing like that! It'll either be a round metal doorknob, or nothing at all. Minimum is the door knocker and lock I think.

I don't like handles on the front door either.

WinterMusings · 26/07/2022 23:08

I need replace my front door, but I'll miss the knocker that's on my door currently - but I won't miss the house shaking ability it has when the postie/delivery guys bank the living crap out if it.

it's a proper old, heavy thing. I live it, but the composite doors need to have stuff fitted at the factory. 🥲

Davros · 26/07/2022 23:16

Can you keep the old knocker as a paperweight or something?

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 29/07/2022 00:33

@Leftbutcameback If you really like your current glazed panel, it's possible to incorporate it in a double glazed unit and fit into the new door (provided the shape is similar, of course).

Leftbutcameback · 29/07/2022 08:33

@NoIdeasForWittyNickname it's a different shape - two long narrow panels - but I'll definitely keep the glass and get something nice made from it

Fair enough 😊
