Need some ideas please! We'll be moving in September into a lovely house that needs complete redecoration (owners have been in there for 30 years since new) - I want to start with the living room so that we have a comfy space to relax but I'm frazzled with so many ideas 😩it's going to be our forever home so I want to get it right and I think that's why I'm stuck! I've always stayed with neutral and boring before because I knew we'd be moving on so every idea welcome - I love blue, velvet, green, bloody hate pink and need everything from paint to furniture - see pics for what I'm dealing with!

Xxx

First thing I’d do is replaster ceiling, change ceiling light fitting and replace flooring (either looped carpet or wood flooring with a rug if you have young kids/pets). Then you’ll have a blank canvas to work with. If you like blue/green have a look at SomethingBlueHome and Melanie Lissack Interiors on Insta. Good luck!

There seem to be too many sofas and armchairs and they are shoved to the wall. It will look better after the furniture has been removed.

What sort of living rooms do you like?

foibles2011 · 25/07/2022 12:47

Yep think the replaster is a must! And the carpet will go the day we move in it gives me a headache just looking at the photos 🤣 I'll check out the links thank you 😊

@BridgeOverTheRiverWye I tend to like modern but cosy - not a fan of grey on grey though. Things like the zinc sofas from DFS, round mirrors - think they call it scandi? X

Honestly my best advice is try and live with it just a few weeks at least before 100% committing. I had all kinds of ideas for my house, but after being here a little while, some of them just didn't fit like I thought they might.

Trying to pin down a style you like, like scandi boho, cottage core or whatever might help you narrow things down.

I'd get the ceiling skimmed and the light changed, and the uplighter changed. The fireplace isn't too bad but if you don't like it, get it changed.

If the walls are papered, get it removed. Paint the walls white, and live with it for a year, as you'll get a feel for how it looks at different times of the day throughout the year.

I agree live with it for a while until you see what the light is like. Sometimes what you think will suit proves not to be right. I do love the window seat though.

Ooh but waiting is soo hard 🤣 but I'm sure you're right - I guess I could neutralise it and then see how I feel x

That window seat is so lovely! How lucky.

I'd go parque and a lovely warm neutral, then pick up your colours in a some deep accent cushions

foibles2011 · 25/07/2022 16:32

That sounds like a nice idea @SavingsThreads 😁 - I love the window seat too x

I'd paint it all white, then find a suite you like and start from there.
A three piece suite takes months from somewhere like Sofology, so you'll have plenty of time to get the new carpet/flooring laid while you're waiting.

We've been looking into getting some new sofas for when we move into our new house and also have the sofa decisions to do too. Have visited a couple of sofa places and the lead times were quoted at between 16 and 26 weeks so you'll probably have a while to live in the new space and get a feel for what you want?

If you want modern but cosy try googling Japandi style. Neutral but lots of texture
