Sink without a drainer - totally impractical?

We have had an offer accepted on a house and Im thinking of the smaller details and practicalities of living in it. The kitchen is stunning and has a large island in it. The sink is in the island (an intergrated dishwasher is underneath it) but theres no draining board. Obviously its not a deal breaker but whilst it looks lovely, is it completely impractical? Theres also a small utility room with a sink but theres no drainer in there either!

You can get drainers to go on worktop!

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 19/07/2022 23:12

you can get nice dish racks with a tray to catch the drips, or you could change your sink unit?

We just have a ceramic worktop drainer. Cost about £40. So not worth passing over a good house for.

Does it have a double sink? We have a double sink and no drainer, and put a wire mesh drainer in the second sink. The advantage is that anything drying is below eye level. We have a dishwasher and almost everything goes in it. Dirty dishes get piled above the dishwasher where the drainer would be. I don't think it would work if we didn't have a dishwasher! We also have a utility (laundry room really, not next to kitchen) and I use the sink in there if I want to soak something.

We don't have a drainer either, very impractical so I bought this

Oh no - its not a deal breaker! The house is lovely, Im just trying to think through the day to day practicalities of living in it.

No just the one sink in the kitchen and the utility/ laundry. It means there's a big work surface on the island. It looks lovely.

If it's a hard water area I wouldn't want to not have a proper drainer. Those other options will get build up really quickly.

We don't have a drainer either. We use draining mats. Hard water area.

I too use draining mats (absorbent material and they can be washed).

If you want to kitchen to look smarter you can roll them up and put them away on special occasions.

We have the set up you describe (out of choice), large island with sink, no drainer. We use draining mats or a version of the Joseph drainer linked above. Personally, I think drainer / draining grooves are really old fashioned & would have completely spoiled the look I wanted for the kitchen. Washing up is dried pretty much immediately and put away.
