Customising this lampshade

I've had the chance to get this lampshade that I love and normally cost £££. Problem is they only have the black version and that doesn't go with our scheme.

Does anyone know if I / a seamstress would be able to cover the outside with some fabric to make it more like the ash version???

I would think the shape would make that almost impossible to cover, sorry.

Could you use fabric paint at all?

RockinHorseShit · 18/07/2022 10:42

It's difficult to say whether it can be covered, without knowing if it can be taken apart to access it all to secure any fabric or stick on covering. If it can, then it shouldn't be too difficult. Leather dye might be an option otherwise though. You can get some very easy to use, good coverage ones that are self sealing now

Yeah I'm thinking maybe paint. It's actually made out of wood. I'm also wondering if it would be possible to deconstruct, cover and then weld back the metal together? 😂

Thanks @RockinHorseShit Would leather dye work on wood?

You might be able to make it fit your scheme...would you be willing to show us a photo of the room to give us an idea?

RockinHorseShit · 18/07/2022 10:55

I hadn't realised it was wood, but had presumed some sort of stiff canvass.

Yes it would work, but tbh, if it's wood I'd probably go for a suitable spray paint

Yeah it's not clear in the photo but pretty sure it's a ply or something. Suspect spray paint is the way to go!

Look up some lampshade making tutorials, I am reckless enough that I would carefully take that apart and use the existing shade as a template.

Buy some upholstery fabric you like and it looks pretty simple, it appears to be a large circular design with arches kind of like a flower then holes punched that are fed through the wire frame to create the fluted effect.

So upholstery fabric with a stabiliser layer to add stiffness (nonflammable) cut to shape, a hole punch to make neat holes.

I don't think it would be that complicated, but of course the risk is that you'd need to deconstruct the original to do it.

If it doesn't come apart, it will be the only way to do it, but if it does, then something self adhesive backed & upholstery type would work too

ilkleymoorbartat · 18/07/2022 11:03

Amazing, thanks all! Going to risk it. 🙏

It goes without saying that you need to make sure the paint/glue/fabric is heat safe!

ilkleymoorbartat · 18/07/2022 11:07

Thanks @NiqueNique Will remember that too!
