Navy and white bathroom - dated / will date / classic

First world problem alert…

We’re getting the bathroom done - going for oak units, white suite and probably white gloss tiles. I was thinking of a greyish navy colour on one wall and something like this for our floor tiles. Will it date badly or is it a classic look?

I ripped out a bathroom with blue and white tiles about 7 years ago . It also had gold taps.
Put in what you like . If you sell in 10 years it won’t matter.

NighghtmareNeighbour · 18/07/2022 07:55

I really like them, but I tend to go for fairly neutral with flooring or tiling, so it can blend in with various different colour themes/patterns on other items that are easier to change.

teezletangler · 18/07/2022 08:12

It's a lovely pattern but I do think that tile will date very quickly, and may possibly already be "over"? I think you can still create an interesting mosaic floor with a much simpler pattern and it will look good for a lot longer.

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 08:25

Yes I wondered if it might already be 'over' too Sad. Shame, as I really love them. We've got for something very neutral and plain for our en-suite which is why I wanted something with a bit of colour and interest this time, and I wondered if I could get away with it as the walls would be white tiles (apart from the one grey/navy one).

What type of mosaic floor could I go for instead?

Surely what counts is if you like it, Not whether it will “date”?

Im away to do a bathroom in navy and white because it’s what I like, not because it’s fashionable

strawberry12345 · 18/07/2022 08:29

I’ve got those tiles in my shower room and think they look great. Had them 3 years but they still look fresh

DIL has these tiles in her bathroom Laura Ashley I think but has stayed white for tiles walls pale blu/grey, vanity similar. It's beautiful. Go for navy accessories towels etc if you like

We're trying to do the house before we retire in a couple of years as we won't have lots of spare money after then - hence wanting to go for something that won't date too much.

Thanks @strawberry12345 and @justasking111 - sounds exactly the sort of thing I'm going for

If you love the tiles, then have the tiles.

Blue and white isn't exactly the most unusual colour for a bathroom, after all.

Bestshapeever · 18/07/2022 09:03

Blimey who cares if they date! They're really nice tiles and yes blue and white a great combination. If you're going to live in the house for a long time why does it matter if they're trendy or not? You'd have to change them every year and I mean who even does that?!

We're not going to live in it for a long time, we're retiring in a few years and plan to move.

Anyway, the general consensus is that they are lovely tiles and blue and white is a perfectly good colour for a bathroom so I'm going for them Smile

Another plus with these they're not slipoy

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 10:05

Oh that’s good to know - thanks 😊

Beautiful tiles! Anything you do now will appear dated to some buyers in 10 years time so dont worry about it.

TheMess · 18/07/2022 10:09

I think Victorian-style bathrooms date much better than the 'big textured slab tiles in shades of digestive biscuit with a feature strip of glittery mosaics' modern ones. Maybe because they're pre-dated?

RidingMyBike · 18/07/2022 10:15

I think they're lovely and will probably date better than some really modern styles! We'd have happily bought a house with these in (the one we have bought has biscuity beige things that look horrible and weren't installed well!)

moodymary · 18/07/2022 10:17

The tiles are a classic Laura Ashley print from the mid 1980s so I don’t think the design itself will date. The blue might not necessarily appeal to future buyers if you’re thinking of moving, but then if it’s your home it’s important to decorate it in the way you want to! Unless you’re renovating to sell, I would just go with what you like. Most bathrooms and kitchens will look ‘of their time’ 10 or 20 year years later

RidingMyBike · 18/07/2022 10:20

We did up our bathroom in previous house 12 years ago. We're now looking to do it in new house - not just tile colours and designs have changed but all the sanitary ware is a totally different shape now. 12 years ago it was flowing lines and everything curved. Now it's all squares and angles!

So whatever you do, it will date. But that won't matter if it's something you love in the meantime.

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 10:33

Thanks everyone , I’m definitely going for them now. Our (exceedingly handsome) bathroom fitter is coming to do a final measure up next week so I’ll get them ordered. I’m more excited than I should be. That might be the prospect of the very handsome man in my bathroom though, now that I think about it.

I love that style. Some friends of my parents had them in their cloakroom in the 80s (in a different colour way) and they looked lovely for decades!

LoveLabradors · 18/07/2022 14:15

And they had the fabric too. Some styles are timeless.

dolphinsarentcommon · 18/07/2022 14:17

We've had those in a small bathroom and they look lovely.

BTW loads to be had on Fb marketplace massively cheaper. I bought seconds through a 'shop' and only a couple were clearly seconds and not usable.

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 19:14

Did you buy that exact tile on eBay? Or similar? Which shop did you use if you don’t mind me asking?

OP posts:
dolphinsarentcommon · 18/07/2022 19:17

Hi. It was a different colour and it was a Fb marketplace seller who seemed to deal in all sorts of seconds. Collected them from an industrial unit

Might be worth searching for similar though

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 19:21

Good idea, thanks - will take a look
