Help me with furniture placement

I need this room to function as a lounge and dining space. We’ll have a daytime snug/playroom so this is a “nice” lounge where DH and can relax and watch tv at night when DC are in bed with all the toy mess shut away in the playroom 😬or we can sit with family, and a space where we can sit and have family meals - both everyday with just us and DCs and at occasions with more family.

4 seater table is fine for us everyday but I’d like one that extends to accommodate more people for occasions (happy to have to rearrange furniture to extend!).

When we viewed the property it was an empty room, pale wood floor and all walls painted white. It was such a blank canvas that I’m struggling to see it in use 🙈 I’m intrigued as to how you’d lay the room out.

Blue is window (almost full wall) with radiator underneath. Red is fireplace.

We’ll be buying all new furniture for this room so open to all seating configurations etc. We just really need seating, coffee table, tv&unit, dining table.

I would probably arrange the sofa (L shaped?) in the bay area with the TV on the left of the fireplace.
Round (round to oval?) table as you come in. Nicer to walk into a room with softer edged table rather than rectangular.

Good advice here

Thanks @trickyex - that’s a really helpful article! I’m really not wanting it to be an overly cluttered space. I was thinking along the lines of the layout you suggested but DH is thinking a straight sofa and then 2 armchairs facing towards the window to almost section off the seating area from the dining. I’d be a bit concerned about that making the room feel smaller than it is

Yes two chairs could work plus sofa.
How many do you want to seat?
I do think having chairs with the back to the sofa isnt the most friendly of layouts though, never lovely to heave your back to the room entrance.
Maybe use some cardboard boxes to mark out the sofa/chair sizes and go from there?

@trickyex Ideally would love a table that seats 4 and can extend to 8 if that’s possible! Lounge seating is fine as 4-6 and I’m happy for them to have to squeeze up a bit on the sofa if needed 🤣🤣
Great tip about the boxes 👍🏻

I mistyped before, I meant its not that lovely to sit on sofa/armchair with your back to the door.
In terms of a table, you could look for vintage (try FB or Gumtree). That way you can try out for size/shape/style and upgrade at a later date if needed, takes the pressure off trying to find the perfect piece (table shopping is quite tricky IME).

Where is the kitchen (thinking from a “travelling with plates” perspective m) and what does the window look out onto?

@trickyex Yes I’m struggling to see a table I love already!! There’s some great vintage furniture shops just over an hour from us so I’m thinking a wee trip to those might be worthwhile 😊

@MissStarry There is a long narrow hallway running through the middle of the property. Kitchen door is directly opposite the double doors into this room. So I’d rather have table as you come in and seating by the window rather than the other way and having to travel through the seating with plates 😊
Window looks out onto the front garden. Very quiet cul-de-sac and all houses are set a decent amount back from the road

You can find some nice mid century round to oval extendable tables if that fits in with your style, the G Plans are quite simple/timeless.

Mosaic123 · 19/07/2022 11:11

My suggestion is to buy very comfortable dining chairs as you can use them for visitors in the lounge part and then take them to the table. If you can run to 8 you can keep the spare ones around the house for everyday.

We bought a very nice table (to keep for ever!) and cheaper, faux leather but comfortable, chairs. The table is an extendable Fritz Hansen (Danish) table with narrow metal legs and a white super tough surface.

The type of legs affects how many people can get round the table. Don't go chunky. Also consider getting narrow-ish dining chairs.

Also if your furniture is a brand phone around to see what kind of deal you can get. And finally use credit card for protection as any company could go bust whilst you wait many weeks for your furniture.

@Mosaic123 great tips, thank you 😊 I don’t mind paying for quality and comfort and something that will last 😊
