So I'm wanting to try and bleach our dining table, it's currently got an orangy varnish on it, as you can see from pics I'm in the process of stripping and sanding it but I want it lighter like the last photo.
Obviously I'm partly limited by the type of wood but the only videos I can find on YouTube are American ones and can't find the products they use, the woman I asked in B&Q looked at me like I was a mad woman when I asked if they stocked wood bleach!

It looks like you've done a good job so far. I'm not sure how light you'll be able to get it with bleach as the stain may have soaked deep into the wood. What about making a paintwash with a white white/off white wood paint mixed with a little bit of water and then sort of wipe it on/wipe it off with a dry sponge (in the direction of the grain). I've done this to achieve the bleached look with a few pieces of furniture and achieved a good result. You can then varnish it with clear varnish to make it more durable.

Never heard of bleaching wood. I think you might need a white or grey tinted oil or wax for a lighter finish

Maybe I'll have to look into putting a wash on it then, I have wax to seal it, might have to test it on the extender bit than slots into the middle in case I ruin it!

The absolute best for lightening and protecting pale wood is Osmo 3040. Two thin coats are all you need. 125ml pot would be plenty for your table.

B&Q sell wood bleach. At least they did last time I needed it. It was called wood lightener though.

Alternatively you just need oxalic acid.

I've not got very far, underestimated how long it would take trying to complete with 2 young children and not being able to use the sander while it was nap time!
I've stripped and sanded the top just need to do the legs.
I've done the extender but in the middle then whitewashed and piled it and am really pleased with the finish but don't have a photo and currently on hol.
Will def post a photo of it when it's all finished!

Where's yours from @skippy67 ? We were given ours about 7 years ago from MIL and wondered where she got it but she'd probably think I was odd asking all these years later

Take a look on YouTube how to do whitewash on the wood, it should give you similar results to the bleach effect.

Finally finished! I used the 3040 osmo oil in the end but ran out so have left the legs and just clear waxed them. I've definitely put the osmo on too thick in parts but overall I'm really happy with it and pleased I did it!

That looks great OP. I would love to do the same on our floors which are solid oak but the varnish has turned a horrid orangey colour - it's a huge job though! It's dead satisfying making something look new with a bit of diy though isn't it?

What a difference! Why does varnish turn orangey over time ? So annoying.
