Breathable paint?

I have a patch on a wall where the paint is bubbling and peeling. There was water coming in from outside, which has now been stopped, but its an older house, and it seems to have affected the plaster. I've spoken to a plasterer about stripping off the plaster and then re-plastering, but he's suggested re-painting it with a more breathable paint instead. It's currently painted in Farrow & Ball, which is apparently quite breathable, but isn't marketed as such. Are there other paints I could use??

I’m guessing that once the damp has lifted the paint away from the plaster, you need to strip the remainder of the paint, allow the plaster to thoroughly dry, then use a breathable primer & topcoat.

Little Greene, Edward Bulmer, F&B... Id be checking websites of ££££ paint companies for breatgability.

We used earthborn clay paint on lyme plaster. That is meant to be breathable.

Maybe check out Ingilby online - they do natural breathable paints for many scenarios.

What is the “structure” of your house? It might not be enough to use the “right” paint inside. If your property is timber-framed (even if the timber isn’t visible) then what it’s coated with outside is even more important than the inside (speaking from experience!)

Lots of helpful ideas - thank you! I did strip off the old paint back to the plaster, and its the new paint which is now bubbling again - so perhaps I need to strip it off, and leave it for longer to thoroughly dry out. The walls of the house are stone but with an infill of rubble - which, once it gets damp, takes time to dry out.

I assume it is the pink gypsum plaster? If it is completely dried out then we have had some success in covering stains from roof leaks by painting over the area with something to seal it, like satinwood or eggshell and then going over the top with the normal matt paint.
