What is the new grey?

I moved into my house a little while ago and am thinking about redecorating.

It is a mid terrace, with the lounge and dining room knocked through, open plan to hall. natural light from the kitchen at the rear (morning sun) and front room windows (afternoon sun) . So mid section darker.

It is currently a very pale grey throughout the front room and dining area. White in the kitchen. Works quite well. But grey is causing much shudderment on MN!

My sofa is teal (Zinc) , furniture tending to mid century. Nothing flowery.

What is the new grey?

pick whatever you like. We have Borrowed Light by F&B and I never tire of it.

Thank you, that’s helpful.

LOL, once the tester pot patches are up, I have to do it!

I'll be thankful when the grey trend dies.mrs hinch issue houses that people don't even like just follow the Instatrends.so many gorgeous houses ruined and turned cold when the person didn't actually want it so it didn't fit.
Sunshine yellow, varying might work nice on this wall.we have some beautiful shades of this from dark to light and the rooms look gorgeous.or a more cream colour with golden yellowed accented curtains.
Do you have pic of rest of room so we can see size and how it catches the light etc.
A real could also work or even mustard yellow.

I wanted to add something possibly controversial, so don’t flame me 😁 I had my colours done and the lady who did them said to decorate in tones of your colours so you always look your best at home. Fortuitously I had already managed to do this as they are colours that I love.
Borrowed light by F&B is gorgeous, I’ve used it in two consecutive houses in my DD’s bedroom.

Summersdreaming · 15/06/2022 07:55

Don't tester pot the wall, paint a4 pieces of paper and stick them up, so you can move them round 😉

PrisonerofZeroCovid · 15/06/2022 07:58

You get it painted every year?! Is that because of marks?

Basically yes. My children don't seem to be overly rambunctious but the scuffing and general grubbiness in high touch areas is so annoying. The solution is probably paint it another colour but I'm addicted to white.

woodencoffetable · 15/06/2022 08:30

The new trend? Who cares? Mine is grey because I like it. It's a dark grey. It will remain a dark grey. but the new trends are blue and green.

Beamur · 15/06/2022 08:42

I've always liked colour so the tonal grey thing never appealed to me.
My DH is generally our colour picker but I do have to steer him away from shades of terracotta. He's just painted a flat he's renovating for his Mum. Gone for most of the walls in a white with an undertone of grey with one wall a lovely deep rose colour. It has a teal sofa against this wall and it looks lovely. Brown (!) carpet.
There's a mezzanine floor and he's painted another wall up there a colour that closely matches the sofa. One bedroom wall is in the pink/rose too. Furniture is mostly dark vintage wood. Furniture in lounge is more modern but with a couple of nice pale wood items (got a bargain Ercol folding coffee table) and an old wooden bookcase, pale but not pine.
So the flat is a palette of white, dark pink, turquoise and with this quite luxurious brown carpet. I wasn't sure about the carpet but the combination is both cosy and fresh.
I saw a lovely room recently that was pale pinks/lemon/grey which looked really nice together.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 15/06/2022 08:52

I'll be using pale grey until I die! It looks brilliant with bright art work and real wooden furniture. To hell with the views of anyone on Mumsnet!

WhatIsThisPlease · 15/06/2022 09:24

White! Looks light and fresh and timeless. And it will look fab with your sofa.

I'm over the whole grey thing too. I've still got a grey office but I think it works in here as it's a bit dull much like my work

I tried that - used printer paper and it dries with big wavy wrinkles that create shadows - make sure you use good thick paper

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 15/06/2022 11:42

I’m told it’s ‘greige’ that is a shed, no a shade between grey and cream. Personally I have always loved terracotta or yellow in dark rooms. You could always put the strong colour in a panel if you don’t feel too brave.

coloured ceilings are a terrific way to warm a room, we had a north facing narrow room with a pale apricot ceiling. We kept thinking we had left the light on!

TattiePants · 15/06/2022 16:31

@CompoundV the best thing is to buy a cheap roll of lining paper then you can move the swatches around the room but you don't get the wrinkled effect you get with painted paper.

It also looks completely different colour on the wall to paper.juzt do tester patches in all areas.

MsOllie · 16/06/2022 03:39

Just go for what you love
My bedroom is grey, I find it a relaxing colour and not cold but I've got loads of patterns and textures and other colours in the room
My living room is also very pale grey but again, duck egg blue, teal soft furnishings etc
I even have grey blinds

Saz12 · 17/06/2022 20:14

IMO the next homeward fashion will be spicy colours - burnt orange, pink, sunset tones, etc. Because the last 10 years have been grey/blue/green cool colours, the next 10 years will be “warm” tones.

In the 90’s you had “porridge bowl” as your sophisticated neutral scheme, and “shabby chic” for “characterful/ bold” schemes.

Then we had “grey-and-White” or, if you were “colour confident” grey with “pops of colour”. And “navy blue-with-brass and mid-century-modern” as your “xharacter/bold” scheme.

In the 80’s it was terracotta, too much wood, cork tiles, in the 70’s it was sludge colours and macrame, Brown/orange/green....

Eadiest to see in kitchens.

its s all a load of smelly old shite, really. Marketing and waste.

whatwasyournamesorry · 18/06/2022 08:50

I still love grey

Just painted a room using dulux overtly olive. Look it up. It seems to go in all rooms. Bathroom, bedroom, sitting room

Hurstlandshome · 18/06/2022 11:13

Why don't people just answer the question instead of telling OP what to do?
Lots of 70's stuff in fashion - I reckon browns and beiges will make a comeback.

wotsitsaremyfave · 19/06/2022 21:43

Green

GayParis · 19/06/2022 21:47

I always hated the grey.

This is my 3rd house and I've done what I always should have and decorated it exactly however makes me happy.

I currently have a sulking room pink living room, a neutral kitchen/utility, I've got a bottle green downstairs bathroom, an emerald green room and a pink en suite. And a navy blue & white main bathroom.

It's the most I've loved my decoration as well & there's def a lot to be said for just doing what you like/makes you happy!

JaninaDuszejko · 19/06/2022 21:58

I think we're seeing the death of the light neutral. After 30 odd years (magnolia in the 90s then white in the 00s and grey in the 10s) the fashion seems to be going darker. So green is my current obsession in the same way grey was back in 2005 but I've also seen lots of earthy colours on blogs.

The 90’s were full of colour - a total over reaction to magnolia maybe. But I remember orange, yellows - especially for kitchens, lime greens for bathrooms. Terracotta and lilac - not together! in there too. Maybe you have forgotten. We needed a little bit of Zen after all that madness!

wotsitsaremyfave · 20/06/2022 07:24

@CompoundV

That's what i remember

Red walls

BeautifulWar · 20/06/2022 07:28

The problem with choosing the in colour is that it won't be in for long. Better to choose a colour you genuinely like.

Do you use Dulux washable paint because it really stands up to a good scrub and looks new again!

SausageAndCash · 20/06/2022 08:16

I will not choose a colour I don’t like, and am not a sheeple to fashion. I was mostly curious as to emerging decorating trends to see if I DO like them. For inspiration.

I saw the trend for highly mirrored surfaces, very shiny, and lots of gold accessories, lots of yellow: not me.

I like the dark blue / deep green rooms I have seen… currently about to explore testers of Borrowed Light as an idea that arose from this thread.
