What would you do to this kitchen?

So, we've very nearly bought this house and although my MIL insists it's fine Hmm she's not living here.

So, I'm don't know wether to paint units and change handles, change work tops and tiles. Or, suck it up and have a new kitchen fitted.

I'm not sure if by the time I've paid to have everything altered I might aswell just look into a new kitchen.

Advice is ever so welcome.

I quite like it.

It's not a bad kitchen at all! I'd change the tiles and worktop. You can paint the units if you want but I think with new worktops and less fussy tiles they would look nice as they are.

Quartz worktop, white ceramic sink & white subway tiles would give a much nicer blank canvas for coloured accessories etc.

If it was mine, I’d replace the tiles to suit my taste (something light and colourful! Hate black) and also replace the worktop, I would do silestone quartz if I coukd afford it but as I can’t I’d do Minerva white plastic (forget what is called but does look like stone) or a laminate.

Whatever you do, protect that floor well before you let any tradesmen near it!!

Ps not sure what is in rest of room but if there is any extra space et the end of the worktop run you could have a worktop curved overhang and tuck a bar stool under it to make a teeny breakfast bar. Or you could put very thin spice rack shelving / towel rack on the side of the cabinet.

It’ll look much more homey once its in use

That's a good point. This is the other end, we were thinking corner seating and table with a big pendant light.

I think it's quite dated, I can see why your MIL likes it as it looks like my MILs kitchen.

Is it a good quality kitchen? If so I'd paint the doors, you can get them done professionally as well, changes tiles and hardware and worktop. You could easily get the look of the one you like. If it's not, I'd replace it. Life's too short to hate your kitchen.

If the kitchen works well, has a good layout and is in good overall condition I would have it professionally resprayed and change the worktops/tiles. You should get change out of £3-4k depending on what worktop you choose

This is a good half way option. Painted units, even done professionally, aren’t always best value for money.

Im assuming you need a freestanding fridge freezer too?

I recently had a new kitchen fitted, and whilst it was a bit of a pain it is 100% worth it. Add a little light in the kitchen and make it brighter, it has quite a dark theme.

We went for white gloss cupboards and a gray worktop - it really brightened the room!

Yes it's a decent kitchen, that's why I'm tempted to keep it. I would get them professionally sprayed.

New sink, tap and worktop and I think it's how I want it.

Yes I need a fridge freezer it will go to the left on the end when looking at the oven.

It’s a bit dated but with a repaint, new worktops, and replacing the cooker hood with something a bit more up to date it would be fine. Have they put the flooring down on the diagonal? That looks a bit odd from the photo…

I don't mind it, but as a PP says, it looks like something my mum would choose to be modern.

A change of tile and work top would do wonders!!!

I think a change of floor colour / material / layout might brighten it too.
It's a rather strangely arranged and laid out floor imo. My eyes went straight to it.

I would:

change worktop to white
white Backsplash
spray paint the units a pale color (soft blue/ green/ pink)
put shelves around the extractor fan
put rug in floor
when dishwasher needs replacing, go for stainless steel
change handles to whatever you like
fill with plants - lots of lovely light

The room is long and narrow so there aren’t too many options when it comes to design. Stick with what you’ve got, if the cabinets are solid and in good condition. Spend you money on tiles, blind, rug, light fixtures, white goods

Is it real wood or laminate / MDF? If real wood, wouldn’t paint it and leave it bare — my quite expensive kitchen company said a bare wood island (which I really wanted) would be more expensive than painted!

A quartz or marble work top, carried up to make the backsplash, warm brass or black hardware and pendant and some natural accessories (plants, rattan baskets, wooden chopping boards) and it could look like a dream.

That's fantastic advise. This is what I needed. I know what I like but when it comes to interior design I seem to be absolutely shit at getting there.

I’d change the floor and the tiles, I probably wouldn’t paint the units, they look nice.

I would have it wrapped - light grey with white tiles. I see these kitchen wrap makeovers on FB all the time and they look fab!
don’t know how much they cost tho

I'll look into it but we have a good friend who's a decorator so spraying would probably be cheaper for us.

I don't see what's wrong with the units and handles. I would change the tiles and am unsure about the worktop. What I don't like is the floor going diagonally across the room. It should be straight across in line with the units.

In my opinion they are dated. The floor however doesn't bother me, I don't really get the horizontal thing and will eventually change it but it's not at the top of my list.

I think the floor clashes with the cupboards.
mid havecthe cupboards resonated, tiles and worktop changed.
