Or, to put it another way - is F&B paint worth the price tag ?
How about the Laura Ashley paint in B&Q ?
Or any other suggestions for quality paint ???

I’m looking for a neutral but warm bedroom paint. Thanks in advance 😁

I swear by Little Greene Paint Company. It's like painting with cream, really lovely finish and hard wearing. In my opinion much superior to F&B.

thecoffeewasthething · 01/05/2022 20:23

F&B colours are fab, but painting with it is decidedly not. I always get it colour matched at my local dulux trade centre, using their heritage range. Half the price of F&B, and is a joy to paint with.

Go to a Crown Decorating Centre. The Crown brand paint there is better quality than paint from a DIY shop. That's why professional decorators buy their paint from their and other decorating centres. They will colour match any paint you want.

Little Greene Paint Co - all day, every day. Their emulsion is thick and creamy, great pigmentation. Their Tom’s Oil for woodwork is bombproof - can be used outdoors, but I use it on kitchen cabinets plus skirting/doors/frames.

it’s not cheap, but a little goes a long way. F&B is shit in comparison.

Also, it’s not advertised really on their site, but they will do bespoke colours. Pretty much every paint colour is assigned a RAL code. So, if you’ve seen a colour you like elsewhere, find out the RAL code and Little Greene will be able to produce it in whatever finish you want.

TheDogsMother · 02/05/2022 03:38

Little Green. You can get F & B colours made up in it.

Pennox · 02/05/2022 03:40

Dulux trade if by far the best in terms.of coverage and ease of painting.

dylanthedragon · 02/05/2022 03:43

I painted a room in F&B and less than a year later, it looks so scruffy. It marks everytime it is touched, edges are chipped and it was really difficult to get an even finish in the first place. I did all the other rooms in dulux easycare and those look as fresh as when I did it - even the kids bedrooms. Everything covered in 2 coats and a nice matt finish/texture.

SonicWomb · 02/05/2022 03:46

Little Greene. F&B is awful…. You generally need three coats which makes it even more expensive

stuntbubbles · 02/05/2022 04:48

Joining in the Little Greene love. It’s wonderful! Really good range of colours too.

WeAreTheHeroes · 02/05/2022 05:00

Trade paint is much better quality than the stuff you can buy in DIY stores. Yes, it's more expensive, but it's well worth it.

Crazykefir · 02/05/2022 05:17

Leyland trade paint 35 quid for 5 litres.

I find F&B Modern Emulsion really good, lasts well, goes on well, wipes and still looks good after a few years, it is also a Which Best Buy, we have never used the Estate Emulsion which is the very matt one as we have only painted the kitchen and hall and wanted wipeable.

Newnormal99 · 02/05/2022 05:56

Little greene. I used Laura Ashley (direct from
Shop) and that seems to have lasts well but it's a low traffic area.

hesbeen2021 · 02/05/2022 05:59

I get F&B colour matched to Johnstones. Much more economical ( though if money was no object I think I'd use F&B as I love the finish)

CorsicaDreaming · 02/05/2022 06:42

I've used Farrow & Ball - both estate emulsion and modern. Plus modern eggshell. They've really improved formulations over the years and now a Which Best Buy (I don't recall seeing Little Greene as a Best Buy but not sure). I love painting with the eggshell and we covered one wall of Estate Emulsion Brinjal (v deep aubergine) with Tallow (magnolia) in two coats, so they now have good coverage

I think they are great. Beautiful pigmented colours. Some have good dupes (Dulux Vanilla Sundae is v like FB Dayroom Yellow). But others like Brinjal are really unique and Dulux equivalents are too brown or too purple. Even the made up shades don't always quite match (we tried multiple testers to match Tallow and nothing had the same tone and/or finish.

In the more neutral colours, I like Ammonite, Pointing and Tallow.

CorsicaDreaming · 02/05/2022 06:47

Neutral warm = FB Tallow or Peignoir or Ammonite could all work, depending on what shade you want. Or Pointing is a warm glowing white.

Well this has been an education - thanks for your excellent replies !!

There was a TV show on 2 weeks ago about home renovations and comparing different paints in terms of cost and coverage. The trade paints (dulux and crown) were the best overall. Our painter recommended velspar, but there are multiple threads on here regarding the awful, urine smell from it!

That's what I meant to say when I mentioned the Crown Decorating Centre above. We have one near us, but the comment was meant to say a place that sells to trade.

I need three coats regardless of which brand I paint with.

MattDamon · 02/05/2022 19:02

My painter will only use Crown.

starlingdarling · 03/05/2022 10:42

We bought our house from a professional painter decorator and all of the walls are painted with Crown paint.

Africa2go · 03/05/2022 18:34

Also like Little Greene over F&B for walls etc. We have also used Johnstones trade paints (colour matched to F&B colours) for woodwork / cupboards.

This is quite a good website - if you don' t have a colour matching service close by and want off-the-shelf colours (or, if you can match it to RAL colours etc), it tells you which alternatives are close to the F&B colours if thats what you're looking for. Compare colours (e-paint.co.uk)

jaundicedoutlook · 03/05/2022 19:39

We’ve done most of our house in Dulux professional and our decorator says you generally need 2 coats of it compare to 3 coats of F&B. Very recently did one room in Neptune’s own brand, which I think is made by Little Greene, and that has also gone on very nicely with 2 coats.

Sd352 · 03/05/2022 21:28

Echoing the love for Little Greene. It goes on well but also has great pigmentation and changes with the light the way F&B does. Mylands is quite good too.
