Looking for tips on best way to paint a dark wooden kitchen please. It's not very big which is a bonus!

Best preparation methods, primers and paints, including good colours to make a small cottage style kitchen look fresh, modern and light.

I’ve painted mine twice, with two separate colours. You firstly need to clean them with sugar soap, to remove all of the grease. Next tape off what you need to, with masking tape; the doors next to the wall etc. Then, use a primer to prime the doors. I used a Farrow and Ball primer, as that’s what brand of paint I used for the main coat(s). Always use a sponge 4inch roller set, as it gives a smooth finish. Then, finally after 2 coats of primer you will ready to put on your colour. I used Farrow and Ball Modern Eggshell, on both occasions, as I think it’s good paint and think it’s worth paying a bit extra for. Have a look on their website for some colour inspiration, their delivery options are good too. It took me just over a week to do my kitchen, which is quite small. Hope this helps.

Have a look at a paint called Frenchic.
There is a Facebook group.
The Alfresco range doesn't need a primer and is self levelling.
Easiest paint you will ever use.

Remove handles/drawer pulls if you can. Poke screw back into holes so that you can still access cupboards while they are drying. Work methodically. Do the outsides first as you’ll get that “result” feeling. It’s then easier to do the inside of doors once the handles are screwed back on.

Use Little Greene Paint Co - their Tom’s Oil Eggshell is bombproof. No scratches, wipes clean easily. Use their ASP as an undercoat (all surface primer - colour matched to pretty much the whole range).

LG paint isn’t cheap - but a little goes a long way and my cupboards looked no different after 5 years. Have recently repainted again as fancied a colour change.

Another way of adding to changing the look is to replace cupboard/drawer knobs. I really like These Please, lots of lovely patterns and colours.

I've done it and it looks quite amateur (and wasn't particularly hardwearing, despite doing all the prep & using F&B paint). If you can afford a company to spray paint the units, I'd recommend it. A friend has done this and the finish is completely different - genuinely looks like a brand new kitchen.

We had ours professionally spray painted last summer and it still looks great even though we have a toddler who likes to bang the doors and flood the sink on a regular basis

I’ve hand painted furniture before and it always looked tatty quickly.

Ive recently just done mine with rust-oleum kitchen cupboard paint, comes in 110 different colours, Matt finish and it says it is scrubbable. I did mine over previously painted cupboards that I sanded down. Finish has come up ok to say they had been painted before.

Zinsser primers are fantastic products which professional decorators use. I would clean with sugar soap, sand, prime then use your chosen paint over the top. Satinwood paint is available in both oil and water based formulations and is easy to clean.
