Hi all, i live in a flat with Victorian, single glazed windows which are quite draughty 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s a housing association flat. I’m so conscious of how quickly the money in my meter has been going down since the 1st April and I haven’t been putting the heating on as much. I’m after suggestions on how to keep the draughts out please. I also have two balcony doors attached to both bedrooms, the bedrooms don’t get much sun as they are at the back and they often feel quite chilly compared to the rest of the property. Are there ways of sealing the windows and doors to keep the cold out? What happens in the summer when I want to open the windows and doors, do I have to take the seals off? Also if anyone can direct me to a site where I can purchase reasonably priced thermal curtains, that would be much appreciated! Complete newbie to all of this!

You can get thermal blackout lining that attaches to your existing curtains.

You can also get a film that you shrink with a hairdryer that stops a bit of cold air, you would have to remove it in the summer to open them though then buy again & reapply in the winter.

Are your windows double glazed and old? I had the black rubber seals on the opening parts of the windows replaced. They were at least 25 years old. They are the strips of rubber/silicone you can see when you open the windows.

Anyway I paid a local glass shop to replace them and it has made a huge difference to the temperature inside the flat. It cost around £250 to do all the opening windows in my 2 bed flat (which has huge windows). It took one man about 4 hours.

Sorry. I see you haven't got double glazing. My apologies

Have you got floorboards? Filling gaps there can help. Sealing all skirting boards.
