Best Stanley knife to cut through carpet

Need a Stanley knife type thing to cut through carpet, need to remove old carpet so planning to cut small strips so I can roll and get it down the stairs into my car all on my own. Seems easier than trying to deal with one huge piece of carpet. Any recommendations?

Use a Stanley knife with hook blades

Not a retractable one! They are utter crap.
I miss my old 99p ‘Stan Stan he’s our man, he can’t do it no one can’ original one from 25years ago - which I’ve lost.

In all seriousness cheap and cheerful, solid metal which has a screw to open and close. They mostly take universal blades so add in hook blades if you can get them, but not imperative.

Thanks for the advice, one with hook blades it is, glad I asked as never heard of them.

the trick is to cut from the underside - much easier! flip over a section and cut.

get a metal handled one where the bladed screw in, the plastic one or retractable blade ones are just a nonsense.

the hook blade sounds brilliant too, I have a stair carpet to deal with at some point, and had not though of that.

You only need to cut a small section, about 30cm and then you can rip it. I stand on the main section of the carpet, pull the strip towards me and walk backwards across the room

Then roll it into a sausage and fasten it with gaffer tape.

I cut it with large household scissors.

If you are getting a a new carpet you will probably need new underlay as well. So that will be double the amount of waste material.

I’ve done this recently and agree with all the above - hooked blade on a screw handle Stanley knife; I took mine outside to cut it but it would be fine to do it indoors with the hook. Definitely cutting from the back, along the line of the weave
